8.3.   Herbal Formula  for Astringent- Ceasing Diarrhea

These formulae are used for chronic diarrhea or loose bowel due to deficiency cold of the spleen adn stomach. The
spleen and stomach are the acquired foundation and dominate transportation and transformation, while kidney is the
con- genital foundation and controls urination and feces. Deficiency-cold of the spleen and stomach, and
unconsolidation of the intestine tract may lead to chronic diarrhea, or loose bowel, poor appetite, abdominal pain which
is alleviated by pres sure, pale tongue with white coating, deep and slow pulse, etc. Method of consolidating the
intestine to cease diarrhea should be used. He Zi (Myrobalan fruit), Yin Su Ke(poppy capsule), Wu Wei Zi (schisandra
fruit), Rou Dou Kou (nutmeg) and Chi Shi Zhi (red halloysite), etc., are commonly used to consolidate the intestine to
cease diarrhea for treating the" branch" , While Bu Gu Zhi (psoralea fruit), Rou Gui (cinnamon bark), Gan Jiang (dried
ginger), Hong Shen (ginseng) and Bai Zhu (bighead atractylodes rhizome) are used for treating the" root" . These two
kind of herbs are selected as major part of the formula.
For syndrome of deficient spleen and qi stagnation, Mu Xiang (aucklandia root), Chen Pi (tangerine peel) and Qing Pi
(green tangerine peel), etc., are added to regulate qi and strengthen the spleen; In case of chronic diarrhea due to blood
deficiency, Dang Gui (Chinese angelica root) and Bai Shao (white peony root) can be combined to nourish and regulate
the blood. The representative formulae are Tao Hua Tang (Peach Flower Decoction), Zhen Ren Yang Zang Tang
(Immortal Viscera-Nourishing Decoction) and Si Shen Wan (Four Miraculous Herbs Pills).
