8.1. Herbal Formula for Astringent- Consolidating Exterior to Stop Sweating
These formulae are used for weakness syndrome of yang qi, uncQnsolidation of defense qi may lead to syndrome of
spontaneous perspiration. The perspiration is closely related to opening and closing function of defense qi. The defense
qi is derived from the lower jiao, and is transformed and engendered by the middle jiao, and is dispersed by the upper
jiao. Qi deficiency of the spleen and lung may lead to unconsolidation of the defense qi loose interstitial space, excretion
of nutrient-yin. The clinical manifestations are spontaneous perspiration, pallor, pale tongue, feeble and thready pulse.
The method of consolidating the exterior to stop sweating should be applied. Huang Qi (Astragalus root), Bai Zhu
(bighead atractylodes rhizome) are common herbs for replenishing the spleen and lung, and consolidating the exterior in
order to treat its" root" ; Ma Huang Gen (Ephedra root), Mu Li (oyster shell), Fo Xiao Mai (light wheat) and Wu Wei
Zi (schisandra fruit) are used to induce astringency to cease sweating for treating its" branch" . The representative
formula is Mu Li San (Oyster Shell Powder).
