8.5.   Herbal Formula  for Astringent- Uterine Bleeding and Vaginal Discharge

These formulae are used for uterine bleeding and morbid leukorrhea. Metrorrhagia and metrostaxis point to vaginal
hemorrhage at irregular intervals. Massive uterine bleeding with a sudden onset is referred to as metrorrhagia, and the
scanty bleeding with incessant dripping of blood as metrostaxis. Chong Meridian for women dominates the sea of
blood. Ren Meridian dominates the nourishment of the fetus. Impairment of Chong and Ren Meridians may cause failure
of blood to circulate meridians, leading to metrorrhagia and metrostaxis, which may be caused by blood heat, spleen
deficiency and blood stagnation, etc. Syndrome differentiation should be made carefully in clinical practice. According to
principle of "treating the ‘ branch' for emergency case" consolidating blood with astringents should
be taken first, after arresting bleeding one should treat disease from the" root" . Duan Long Gu (Calcined dragon bone),
Duan Mu Li (calcined oyster shell), Wu Bei Zi (Chinese gall bitter cardamon),Shan Zhu Yu(Fructus Corni ) and (Wu
Wei Zi ( schisan dra fruit) etc., are commonly used to astringe the blood with astringents, and they are often combined
with Di Yu Tan (carbonized sanguisorba root), Qian Cao Tan (carbonized rubia root), Zhonh Lu Tan (carbonized palm
petiole), Zi Shi Yin (fluorite), Chi Shi Zhi (red halloysite) and Yu Yu Liang (limonite) for inducing astringency to arrest
bleeding. For failure to command the blood in case of spleen deficiency, they are used with Haung Qi (astragalus root),
Hong Shen (ginseng), Bai zhu (bighead atractylodes rhizome) to invigorate the spleen, benefit qi, and to consolidate
Chong Meridian to command the blood. For bleeding due to heat in the blood, they are used with Huang Qin
(scutellaria root), Huang Bo (phellodendron bark) and Di Huang (dried rehmannia root) etc., to cool blood and stop
bleeding. For case accompanied by blood stasis, they can be used with Ru Xiang (frankincense), Mo Yao (myrrh),Wu
Ling Zhi (trogopterus dung), Dang Gui (Chinese angelica root) and Chuang Xiong (chuanxiong rhizome) etc., to
promote blood circulation and remove stasis.
Morbid leukorrhea is a disease symptomatized by persistent excessive mucous vaginal discharge. The chief causative
factors of leukorrhea are insufficiency of kidney qi, failure of the spleen to transporting and transforming function, which
creates dysfunctions of the Ren and Dai Meridians, leading to leukorrhea. The therapy of inducing astringency to cease
leukorrhea should be applied. Shan Yao (Chinese yam),Qain Shi ( gordon euryale seed),Bai Guo (gingko nut) and Chu
Gen Pi (ailanthus bark) etc. are, often used as main herbs. For case accompanied by dampness heat manifested as
sticky, viscous and stinking yellow leukorrhea, they should be used with Huang Bo (phellodendror bark),Che Qian Zi (
plantain deed), Ze Xia (oriental water plantain rhizome) and Zhi Zi (capejasmine) etc. to, clear away heat and excrete
dampness. For case accompanied by qi stagnation due to depression of the liver, Chai Hu (bupleurm root), Xiang Fu
(Nutgrass flatsedge rhizome) and Bai Shao (white peony root) in a little dose can be added to soothe the liver and
nourish the blood. For leukorrhea marked by profuse and continuous discharge of thin, cold sensation in the lower
abdomen, Rou Gui (cinnamon bark), Xiao Hui Xaing (common fennel fruit), Bu Gu Zhi (psoralea fruit) and Tu Si Zi
(dodder seed) etc.,can be added to the formula to warm the kidney and tonify yang. The representative formulae are
