5.3 Herbal Formula for Clearing Heat -Heat and Poison
Herbal formulae for clearing heat and poison are indicated to syndromes due to pestilence, warm poison, exuberance of
fire, heat or poison manifested by swollen head, erosion of mouth with sore throat, or sores and carbuncle with swelling
and feverish pain, red tongue, rapid pulse, and also restlessness or mania, hemoptysis,
epistaxis, macule and papule, etc. Accumulated fire or heat transforms into poison which leads to retention and
stagnation of qi and blood in meridians. As a result, the exuberant heat brings about putrefaction of flesh which becomes
pustule, then carbuncle, gangrene, furuncle and the like. The wind heat or pestilent poison accumulating in the upper-jiao
or attacking on the head leads to swollen head, sore throat with erosion of mouth; the exuberant fire-poison spreading
the triple jiao is responsible of high fever, coma or mania, or hemoptysis, epistaxis, macule and papule, etc. So it should
be treated with large dose of bitter cold herbs to purge fire and to expel poison. For the spread of fire evil in the triple
jiao, the main herbs in common use are Huang Qin (scutellaria root), Huang Lian (coptis root), Huang Bo
(phellodendron bark), Zhi Zi (capejasmine fruit), Shi Gao (gypsum), etc; for carbuncle and sores, the main herbs in
common use are Jin Yin HUa (honeysuckle flower), Lian Qiao (forsythia fruit), Pu Gong Yin (dandelion herb), Zi Hua
Di Ding (tokyo violet herb), Ye Ju Hua (wild chrysanthemum flower),Ban Lan Gen ( isatis root), etc.
For the wind-heat or pestilent poison attacking on the head, or the beginning of sores, it can be used together with
Sheng Ma (cimicifuga rhizome), Xuan Shen (scrophularia root), Jie Geng ( platycodon root), Bo He (peppermint) and
Ma Bo ( puffball) to clear and soothe the throat; and with Jing Jie (schizonepeta), Fang Feng (ledebouriella root) and
Bai Zhi (dahurian mgelica root) to disperse wind and to re- solve accumulation; for carbuncle and sores with stagnation
of qi and blood, it can be used together with Dang Gui (Chinese angelica root), Chi Shao (red peony root), Ru Xiang
(frankincense),Mo Yao ( myrrh), Niu Huang (bovine gallstone),Bei Mu ( fritillary bulb), Tian Hua Fen (trichosanthes
root), Chen Pi (tangerine peel) and wine to activate blood for dissipating stasis and activate qi for relieving pain as well
as resolve phlegm and accumulation; for the imperforate abscess, it can be used with pangolin scales and Chinese
honeylocust spine to expel poison and to promote perforation. The representative formulae are Huang Lian Jie Du Tang
(Coptis Detoxicating Decoction), Pu Ji Xiao Du Yin (Everyone's Detoxicating Decoction), Xian Fang Huo Ming Yin
(God's Life-Saving Decoction), etc.
