INGREDIENTS:
Chai Hu, Bupleurum root 9g
Dang Gui, Chinese angelica root 9g
Bai Shao, White peony 9g
Bai Zhu, Bighead atractylodes rhizome 9g
Fu Ling, Poria 9g
Zhi Gan Cao, Roasted licorice root 4.5g

DIRECTIONS:
Decoct the above herbs in water with small amount of Sheng Jiang (baked ginger) and Bo He (peppermint) for oral
administration.

EFFECTS:
Soothing the liver to relieve depression and strengthening the Spleen to nourish the nutrient qi.

INDICATIONS:
Stagnation of the liver-qi with blood deficiency manifested by hypochondriac pain, alternate chill and fever, headache with
vertigo, dryness of mouth and throat, lassitude, poor appetite, irregular menstruation, breast distention, wiry and feeble pulse.

ANALYSIS OF FORMULA:

This is a common formula for harmonizing the liver and spleen and a modification from Si Ni Tang (Cold Limbs Powder).
Chai Hu (Bupleurum root) can soothe the liver for relieving depression; Dang Gui (Chinese angelica root) and Bai Shao (white
peony root) can nourish blood for gentling the liver. They act as the main herbs to take care of both the liver structure and
function as well as regulating both qi and blood. As the assistant herbs, Bai Zhu (bighead atractylodes rhizome) and Fu Ling
(poria strengthen)the spleen and eliminate dampness to promote the generation of qi and blood. Small amount of Bo He
(peppermint) and  Wei Jiang (barked ginger) act as the adjuvant herbs to assist the main herbs for dispersing. Zhi Gan Cao
Roasted (Licorice root) is the dispatcher herb to reinforce the middle-qi and to harmonize all the components.

In the present clinic, it has certain curative effects against cases of chronic hepatitis, chronic gastritis, neurosis and central
rytinitis pertaining to stagnation of the liver qi with the spleen deficiency.

ASSOCIATED FORMULAE:

Modified Merry Life Powder (jia wei xiao yao san or Dan Zhi Xiao Yao San), (Summary of Internal Diseases) :
On the basis of Merry Life Powder Mu Dan Pi(moutan bark) 3g and Zhi Zi (capejasmine fruit) 3g are added. The above herbs
should be decocted in water for oral administration.

Effects: soothing the liver and strengthening the spleen to harmonize blood and regulate menstruation. It is used in blood
deficiency of the liver and spleen with transformed heat and fire manifested by fidgeting and being easy to be anger, sweating
or night sweating, headache with dry feeling of eyes, or hectic cheek and dryness of mouth, or irregular menstruation with
lower abdominal pain, or pain of lower abdomen with tenesmic feeling, difficulty and pain with urination, ect.

(2)  Merry Life Powder with Rehmannia (hei xiao yao san) , (Essential Gynecology of Six Books on Medicine) :

On the basis of Merry Life Powder Di huang (rehmannia root) or Shu Di Huang (prepared rehmannia root) is added.

Effects: nourishing blood to soothe the liver and strengthening the spleen to regulate menstruation.
Indications: Blood deficiency of the liver and spleen marked by dysmenorrhea with taut and feeble pulse.(Aidus & E-Fong

                                     逍遥散
 (<< 和剂局方>>)

【组成】 柴胡  当归  白芍  白术  茯苓  ( 各 9g)   炙甘草 (4.5g) 。

【用法】 煨姜、薄荷少许 , 水煎服。

【功效】 疏肝解郁 , 健脾和营。

【主治】肝郁血虚 , 两胁作痛 , 寒热往来 , 头痛目眩 , 口燥咽干 , 神疲食少 , 月经不调 , 乳房作胀 , 脉弦而
虚弱。

【方解】本方为调和肝脾的常用方剂 , 由四逆散衍化而成。方中柴胡疏肝解郁 , 又配当归, 白芍养血柔肝 , 体用兼
顾 , 血气同调 , 共为主药。辅以白术、茯苓健脾利湿 , 使气血得以生化。少加薄荷; 煨姜助主药疏散条达, 为佐。
炙甘草益气和中 , 调和诸药为使药。

现代临床用本方治疗慢性肝炎、慢性胃炎、神经衰弱、中心性视网膜炎等病属肝郁脾虚者 , 有一定疗效。

【附方】

1. 丹栀逍遥散 (<<内科摘要>>) 逍遥散加丹皮、栀子 ( 各 3g), 水煎服。功用 : 疏肝健脾 , 和血调经。治肝脾血
虚 ,化火生热或烦躁易怒, 或自汗盗汗 ,或头痛目涩 ,或颊赤口
干 , 或月经不调 , 少腹作痛 , 或小腹胀坠 , 小便涩痛等证。

2. 黑逍遥散 (<<医略六书•女科指要>>) 迫遥散加生地或熟地。功用 : 养血疏肝 , 健脾调解。主治 : 肝脾血虚 ,
临经腹痛 , 脉弦虚者
