  11.1.  Herbal Formula  for Activating Qi


These formulae are mainly used for syndromes due to stagnation of functional activities of qi. Qi continuous circulated
within the human body, and is normal when it keeps flowing unblock.   The hindrance of qi mechanism appears most
commonly in cases of stagnation of the liver qi, coagulation of yin cold, retention of phlegm dampness, and accumulation
of blood stasis, manifested as stuffy chest, distending pain in the hypochondrium and abdomen, plum-core sensa- tion in
the throat, and hernia, etc. For these conditions, the therapu of activating qi should be used. Commonly used herbs for
activating qi, such as Xiang Fu (xnutgrass flatsedge rhizome), Chuan Lian Zi (sichuan chinaberry), Wu Yao (lindera
root), Hou Pu (magnolia bark), Zhi Shi (immature bitter orange),Mu Xiang (aucklandia root) and Hu He (tangerine pit),
etc., are usually used as main ingredients of the formulae.
For accompanying symptoms of coagulation of yin cold, Gan Jiang (dry ginger), Gao Liang Jiang (galangal rhizome),
Wu Zhu Yu ( evodia fruit), Rou Gui (cinnamon bark) and Xiao Hui Xiang (common fennel fruit) can be added to the
formula to warm yang and expel cold. For accompanying symptoms of retention of phlegm dampness, Zhi Ban Xia
(pinellia tuber),  Guo Luo (trichosanthes fruit), Fu Ling (poria) and Chen Pi (tangerine peel) can be added to the formula
to resolve phlegm and eliminate dampness. For accompanying symptoms of qi stagnation and blood stasis, Dan Shen
(red sage root), Pu Huang (cattail pollen), Dang Gui (Chinese angelica root), Chuanxiong (chuanxiong rhizome) and Tao
Ren (peach kernel) can be added to the formula to promote blood circulation and remove blood stasis. For
accompanying symptoms of qi stagnation transforming into the fire, Zhi Zi (capejasmine fruit) and Tong Cao (Medulla
Tetrapanacis) can be added to the formula to clear away heat and purge the fire. The main representative formulae in
this category are Yu Ju Wan (Stagnation-Relieving Pills), Ban Xia Hou Pu Tang (Pinellia and Magnolia Decoction), Zhi
Shi Xia Bai Gui Zhui Tang (Decoction of Unripened Bitter Orange, Macrostem Onion and Cinnamon Twigs, Luan Gan
Jian (Liver-warming Decoction), Tian Tai Wu Yao San (Tiantai Linderae Powder) and Ju He Wan (Tangerine Seed
Pills).
