        12.2.  Herbal Formula  for Arresting Blood


The herbal formulae are indicated for syndromes of hematemesis, epistaxis, hemoptysis, hematuria hemotochezia,
metrorrhagia and metrostaxis due to travascular flow of blood. Only when blood circulates inside the vessels, can play
its physiological function. The escape of blood from the vessels may lead different disorders Hemorrhage usually occurs
as a result of incised wound, traumatic injury, bleeding due to blood heat, weakness of yang qi and internal accumulation
of blood stasis. Arresting bleeding should be prescribed. Some hemostatics such as Ce Bai Ye (biota tops), Da Ji
(Japanese thistle), Xiao Ji (field thistle), Pu Huang (cat-tail pollen), Xian He Cao (hairy vein agrimony),Zhong Lu Tan (
palma bark), San Qi (notoginseng), E Jiao (donkey-hide gelatin), Ai Ye (argi leaf), Zao Xin Tu ( loess lining of a
hayburning stove) and Huai Hua (sophora flower), are usually taken as principal herbs to constitute the formulae.
The conditions of hemorrhage syndrome are complicated, which exist differences between the mild and heavy, the
chronic and emergency, the cold and heat, the deficiency and excess, the upper and lower, as well as the interior and
exterior. For case of bleeding due to blood-heat, Da Huang (Rhubarb), Zhi Zi (capejasmine fruit), Huang Qin
(scutellaria root), Mu dan Pi (moutan bark) and Di Huang (dried rehmannia root) should be added to the formula to
clear away heat and arrest bleeding. If weakness of yang qi leads to fail of the spleen to command blood, Gan Jiang
(dried ginger) and Zhi Fu Zi (prepared aconite lateral) should be used with the formula to warm yang and stop bleeding.
For case of failure of blood to circulate in the meridians due to prolonged blood stasis, Dang Gui (Chinese angelica
root),Dan Shen ( red sage root) and Chuang Xiong (chuanxiong rhizome) can be added to the form to promote blood
circulation and resolve stasis. Hemostatics combined with he for promoting blood circulation have the effects of arresting
bleeding to premote blood stasis. For hemorrhage in the upper orifices accompanied by symptom excess syndrome,
Niu Xi (achyranthes root) and Zhe Shi (red ochre) can be combined with the for la to lead blood downward. For
hemorrhage in the lower part of the body, a small amount of herbs for elevating can be used with the formula to assist it
in arresting bleeding. The representative formulae are Shi Hui San (Ten Charred Herbs Powder), Si Sheng Wan (Four
Fresh Herbs Pills), Ke  Xue Fang   (Hemoptysis-Arresting Decoction), Xiao JI Yin Zi (Small Thistle Decoction), Huai
Hua San (Sophora Flower Powder) and Huanhg Tu TAng (Yellow Earth Decoction).
