12.1.  Herbal Formula  for Regulating Blood

The herbal formulae for removing blood stasis are used for syndromes of blood accumulation and of blood stasis. Herbs
for promoting blood circulation to remove stasis such as Chuan Xiong (chuanxiong rhizome), Tao Ren (peach kernel),
Hong Hua (safflower), Chi Shao (red prony root), Dan Shen (red sage root), Pu Huang (cattail pollen), Wu Ling Zhi
(trogopterus dung), San Leng (burreed tuber), E Zhu (zedoary) and Tu Bie Chong (ground beetle), etc., are usually
used as principal herbs to form the formulae.
Blood circulation follows the flow of qi, and blood stasis is always accompanied by qi stagnation. Thus, some herbs for
activating qi, such as Chen Pi (tangerine peel), Mu Xiang (aucklandia root), Xiang Fu (nutgrass flatsedge rhizome), Qing
Pi ( green tangerine peel), Zhi  Qaio (bitter orange) and Wu Yao (lindera root) are often added to formulae for
promoting blood circulation and activating qi. Warmth promotes blood circulation, while cold may create stagnation.
That is why some interior warming herbs, such as Wu Zhu Yu (evodia fruit), Gui Zhi (cinnamon twig), Rou Gui
(cinnamon bark), Xiao Hui Xiao (common fennel fruit) and Pao Jiang (baked ginger) are often added to the formulae to
warm the meridians and activate the vessels for dispelling cold and promoting blood circulation. For insufficiency of
yin-blood due to chronic blood stasis causing lack of fresh blood, Di Huang (rehmannia root), Mai Dong (ophiopogon
root), E Jiao (donkey-hide gelatin), Bai Shao (white peony root) and Bie Jia (fresh-water turtle shell) can be added to
the formula to clear away heat and nourish yin. For blood stasis accompanied by qi deficiency, Huang Qi (astragalus
root) should be added to the formula to replenish qi and promote blood circulation. For case of accumulation of blood
and heat, Da Huang (rhubarb), Huang Qin (scutellaria root) and Mu Dan Pi (moutan bark) can be used to clear away
heat and purge fire. The main representative formulae are Tao He Cheng Qi Tang (Purgative Decoction of Peach
Kernel), Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang (Blood- House Stasis- Dispelling Decoction),Fu Yuan Huo Xue Tnang (Decoction of
Activating Blood for Recovery), Bu Yang Huan Wu Tang (Decoction of Invigorating Yang for Recuperation), Wen Jing
Tang (Meridian-Warming Decoction),Sheng Hua Tang ( Blood-Regenerating and Stasis-removing Decoction), Shi Xiao
San (Laughing Powder) and Huo Luo Xiao Ling Dan (Activating Collaterals Effective Pills), etc.
