 11.2.  Herbal Formula  for Lowering Adverse Qi


This group of formulae is mainly used for syndromes due to adverse flow of qi. In clinical practice they appear most
commonly in cases of lung qi failing to depurative descent and adverse rising of stomach qi. Among five zang organ, the
lung dominates depurative descent and the stomach is healthy when its qi descending. Adverse flow of qi can be caused
by the cold evil, heat evil and the phlegm, or failure of the kidney in receiving qi.
Abnormal rising of lung qi is mainly manifested as cough and asthma, and it should be treated with method of lowering
the adverse flow of qi to relieve asthma. Zi Su Zi (Perilla seed), Ku Xin Ren (bitter apricot kernel), Zi Yuan(tatarian
aster root), Kuan Dong Hua (colsfoot flower) and Ma Huang (ephedra) are useally used as principal herbs. Abnormal
rising of the lung qi is mainly manifested by vomiting and hiccup, and therapy of lowering adverse flow of qi should be
used against it. The most commonly used herbs are Xuan Fu Hua (inula flower), Dai Zhe Shi (red achre), Zhi Ban Xia
(pinellia tuber), Sheng Jiang (fresh ginger), Zhu Ru (bamboo shavings), Shi Di (persimmon calyx) and Ding Xiang
(cloves).
If the kidney fails to receive qi, Rou Gui (cinnamon bark), Zhi Fu Zi (prepared lateral root of aconite), and Xiao Hui
Xiang (common fennel fruit) can be added to the formula to warm the kidney and expel cold. If adverse flow of qi is
accompanied by qi deficiency,Dang Shen ( pilose asia bell root), Da Zao (Chinese date) and Gan Cao (liquorice) can
be added to the formula to reinforce the mid- die and benefit qi. If adverse flow of qi is complicated by deficiency-heat,
Mai Dong (ophiopogon root) and Pi Pa Ye(loquat leaf) should be added to the formula to lower qi and clear away heat.
If adverse flow of qi is complicated by phlegm trubidity, Fu Ling (poria),Sang Bai Pi (mulberry bark) and Chen Pi
(tangerine peel) should be added to the formula to eliminate dampness to resolve phlegm. The major representative
formulae are Su Zi JIang Qi Tang (Perilla Seed Qi Iowering Decoction), Ding Chuan TAng (Asthma-Relieving
Decoction),Xuan Fu Dai Zhe TAng ( Inula and Red Ochre Decoction), Ju Pi Zhu Ru Tang (Tangerine Peel and
Bamboo Shavings Decoction) and Ding Xiang Shi Di Tang (Clove Perimmon Calyx Decoction).
