Chai Hu (Bupleurum root) 30g , Qian Hu (Peucedanum root) 30g, Chuang Xiong (Chuanxiong rhizome0)30g, Zhi Qiao
(Bitter orange) 30g, Qiang Huo (Notopterygium root) 30g, Du Huo (Pubescent angelica root) 30g ,Fu Ling (Poria) 30g,
Jie Geng (Platycodon root) 30g, Hong Shen (Ginseng) 30g, Gan Cao (Licorice root) 15g
DIRECTIONS: Grind the above herbs into powder. Decoct 6 gram of the powder each time in water with Shen Jiang (fresh
ginger) and Bo He (peppermint) for oral administration.
EFFECTS: Dispelling wind and dampness to relieve the exterior by sweating
INDICATIONS: Exogenous attack of wind, cold and dampness manifested by
severe chill with high fever, headache with stiff neck, aching of limbs, absence of sweat, stuffy nose with heavy nasal
sound, cough with expectoration, fullness and distress of chest, white greasy coating, floating soft pulse or floating
rapid pulse but feeble in deep touch.
ANALYSIS OF FORMULA: This is a common formula for strengthening the genuine and relieving the exterior. Qiang Huo
(Notopterygium root) and Du Huo (pubescent angelica root) act as the main herbs to dispel wind and dampness for
relieving the exterior and pain as well as reaching meridians of all the body. Chai Hu (Bupleurum root) and Bo He
(peppermint) can expel evils and relieve muscles; Chunan Xiong (chuanxiong rhizome) activates blood for expelling
wind. They act as the assistant herbs. As the adjuvant herbs, Jie Geng (platycodon root) and Zhi Qiao (bitter orange) can
soothe the chest and regulate qi with functions of both ascending and descending; Qian Hu (peucedanum root) disperses
the lung for expelling phlegm; Fu Ling (poria)and Shen Jiang (fresh ginger) can strengthen the spleen to resolve phlegm;
Hong Shen (ginseng strengthens) the genuine qi for expelling wind, cold and dampness evils through sweating. Gan Cao
(Licorice root) acts as the dispatcher herb to harmonize all the components and to tonify qi for harmonizing the middle.
This formula is originally set for infants. Because of insufficiency of the primordial qi in infants, small dosage of
ginseng is used to invigorate it. Afterwards, it was effectively used for cases of senile patient, postpartum or
constitutional deficiency with the exterior syndrome caused by exogenous wind, cold and dampness evils. It was also
applied by Jiayan Yu, a famous practitioner in Qing Dynasty, to treating the beginning of dysentery with the exterior
syndrome. The medicinal property of this formula is mild warm and dryness, so it cannot be applied to the exterior
syndrome not due to exogenous attack of wind, cold and dampness evils.
ASSOCIATED FORMULAE:
(1) Jing Fang Bai Du San (Schizonepeta and Ledebouriella Antiphlogistic Powder) ,(Wonderful Formulae for
Everyone's Life-Preserving):
Qiang Hu (Notopterygium root) 5g, Du Huo (pubescent angelica root) 5g, Chai Hu (bupleurum root) 5g, Qian Hu
(peucedanum root) 5g,Zhi Qiao (bitter orange) 5g, Fu Ling (poria) 5g, Jing Jie (schizonepeta) 5g, Fang Feng
(Iedebouriella root) 5g, Jie Geng (platycodon root) 5g, Chuan Xiong (chuanxiong rhizome) 5g, Gan Cao (licorice
root) 3g.
The above herbs should be decocted in water for oral use.
Effects: inducing perspiration to relieve the exterior and sores.
Indications: the beginning of sores manifested by local swelling pain, chill, fever, absence of sweat, thirst, thin and
white coating, floating rapid pulse.
(2) Cang ling san ,(Formulae for Universal Relief):
Hong Shen (Ginseng), Fu Ling (poria),Gan cao (licorice), Qian Hu (peucedanum root), Chuanxiong (chuanxiong
rhizome), Qiang Huo (notopterygiurn root), Du Huo (pubescent angelica root), Jie Geng (platycodon root) ,Zhi Qiao
(bitter orange), Chai Hu (bupleurum root), Chen Cang Mi (long-stored rice), Shen Jiang (fresh ginger) and Bo He
(peppermint) with equal dosage respectively
The above herbs should be decocted in water for oral use. It is vigorous tonify qi to relieve the exterior, clear poison
and stop vomiting.
Indications: anorectic dysentery with fever and vomiting.
NOTES: Jing Fang Bai Du San (Schizonepeta and Ledebouriella Powder) is a modification of Bai Du San (Anti-
phlogistic Powder) by removing Hong Shen (ginseng), Shen Jiang (ginger) and Bo He (peppermint) and adding Jing Jie
(schizonepeta) and Fang Feng (ledebouriella root). In this formula, there is no effects of tonifying qi and strengthening
the genuine, but the effect of dispelling wind and cold is strengthened. Thus, Jing Fang Bai Du San (Schizonepeta and
Ledebouriella Powder) is more suitable for cases with heavy exterior syndrome. Canglin San is composed of Bai Du
San (Antiphlogistic Powder) plus long-stored rice. It expels dampness and warmness, nourishes the stomach qi without
side-effect of stagnation, so it can be applied to anorectic dysentery of stomach-qi deficiency.
败毒散
<<小儿药证直诀>>
【组成】柴胡 前胡 川芎 麸炒枳壳 羌活 独活 茯苓 桔梗 人参 ( 各 30g) 甘草15g
【用法】上为末 , 每服二钱 (6g) , 入生姜、薄荷煎。
【功效】发汗解表 , 散风祛湿。
【主治】感冒风寒湿邪。憎寒壮热 , 头项强痛 , 肢体酸痛 , 无汗 , 鼻塞声重 , 咳嗽有痰 , 胸膈痞满 , 舌苔白腻 , 脉浮
濡或浮数而重取无力。
【方解】本方是益气解表的常用方。方中羌活、独活散风解表 , 祛湿止痛 , 能通达周身为主药。桔梗、枳壳升降并用
, 宽胸利气 , 前胡宣肺祛痰。获苓、生姜健脾化痰 , 配以小量人参 , 培其正气 , 以鼓邪外出 , 使风寒湿邪随汗出而解
, 共为佐药 , 甘草调和诸药为使 , 兼益气和中。
本方原为小儿而设 , 因小儿元气未充 , 故用小量人参 , 补其元气 , 而后推广用于年老、 产后、大病之后 .以及素体虚
弱而外感风寒湿显邪 , 见有表证者 , 皆有疗效。清代喻嘉言用本方治疗痢疾初起有表证者。本方药性偏于温燥 , 非外
感风寒湿显邪表证 , 不宜使用。
【附方】
1. 荆芥败毒散 <<摄生众妙方 >> 羌活 独活 柴胡 前胡 麸炒枳壳 茯苓 荆芥 防风 桔梗 川芎( 各 5g) 甘草 (3g) 。水
煎服。功用 : 发汗解表 , 消疮止痛。主治 : 疮肿初起 . 红肿疼痛 , 恶寒发热 , 无汗不渴 .舌苔薄白 .脉浮数者。
2. 仓康散 << 普济方 >> 人参 茯苓 甘草 前胡 川芎 羌活 独活 桔梗 麸炒枳壳
柴胡 陈仓米 ( 各等分 ) 罗匀 .加生姜 .薄荷煎服。功用 : 益气解表 .败毒止呕。主治 : 噤口痢 , 毒气冲心 .有热呕
吐。
按 : 荆防败毒散即败毒散去人参、生姜、薄荷 .加荆芥、防风而成。故本方没有益气扶正之功 , 而祛风散寒之力强 ,
适用于表证较重者。仓康散即败毒散加陈仓米 , 养胃气 , 去温热 .而无壅滞之弊 , 故可用于毒重而胃气虚的噤口痢
疾。
