Chai Ge Jie Ji Tang
Bupleurum and Pueraria Decoction for Relieving Muscles
SOURCE: Six Books on Shang Han (febrile Diseases)
INGREDIENTS:
Chai Hu (Bupleurum root) 6g, Gan Ge (Gen) (Pueraria root) 9g, Gan Cao(Licorice root )3g, Huang Qin
(Scutellaria root) 6g, Qiang Huo (Notopterygium root)3g,Bai Zhi (Dahurian angelica root) 3g, Bai Shao
(White peony root) 6g, Jie Geng (Platycodon root)3g
DIRECTIONS: Decoct the above herbs in water with three slices of fresh ginger and two pieces of Chinese
date( or five grams of gypsum) for oral administration
EFFECTS : Relieving muscles and clearing heat .
INDICATIONS: Restrained exogenous wind-cold transforming into heat manifested by gradual decrease of
chill and gradual increase of fever, absence of sweat, headache, aching limbs, pain of eyes and orbit,
dryness of nasal cavity, vexation with insomnia, floating and slight surging pulse.
ANALYSIS OF FORMULA: This formula is mainly used in the diseases of Yangming Meridian. As the main
herbs, Ge Gen (pueraria root) with its pungent and sweet flavors and neutral nature, acts on the exterior of
Yangming Meridian, relieves muscles and expels heat; Chai Hu (Bupleurum root), with bitter flavor and
neutral nature, relieves the exterior for abating fever. As the assistant herbs, Bai Zhi (dahurian angelica
root) acts on the Yangming Meridian to treat forehead pain; Qiang Huo (notopterygium root) acts on the
Taiyang Meridian to relieve the exterior and dispel cold; the combination of Huang Qin (scutellaria root)
and Shi Gao (gypsum) clear the interior heat of the Yangming Meridian. As the adjuvant herbs, the
cooperation of Bai Shao (white peony root) and Gan Cao (licorice root) with sour and sweet flavors for
producing yin, prevent over sweating; Jie Geng (platycodon root) can ventilate the lung-qi; Shen Jiang
(fresh ginger) and Da Zao (Chinese date) can harmonize the nutrient and defensive qi as well as the
middle. Gan Cao (Licorice root) is the dispatcher herb to harmonize all components of the formula.
Modifications: removing Huang Qin (scutellaria root) and adding Ma Huang (ephedra) for severe chill
without sweating; adding ephedra in winter and less in spring; in summer, adding Zi Su Ye (perilla leaf)
instead of Ma Huang (ephedra).
柴葛解肌汤

【组成】柴胡 (6g) 干葛 (9g) 甘草 (3g) 黄苓 (6g) 羌活 (3g) 白芷 (3g) 芍药 (6g) 桔梗 (3g) 。
【用法】姜三片 , 枣二枚 , 或加石膏 (5g) 水煎服。
【功效】解肌清热。
【主治】感冒风寒 , 郁而化热 , 恶寒渐轻 , 身热增盛 , 无汗 , 头痛肢楚 , 目疼鼻干 , 心烦不眠 , 眼眶痛 , 脉浮微洪
者。
【方解】本方治疗阳明经病为主 , 方中葛根辛甘平 , 为阳明经之表药 , 可解肌透热 .柴胡苦平 , 解表退热 , 共为主
药。方中辅药有两组 , 一是白芷 , 羌活、白芷善走阳明经 .治前额头痛 .羌活为太阳经药 , 解表散寒 ; 二是黄苓、石膏
清泄阳明经之里热。白芍、甘草酸甘化阴 , 以防疏散太过 , 桔梗宣利肺气 , 生姜大枣和营卫 .并可和中 .为佐药。甘草
调和诸药 , 为使药。原方加减: “本证无汗 .恶、寒甚者 .去黄苓加麻黄 .冬月宜加春宜少 .夏秋去之加苏叶。”
