Herbal Formula for Relieving Exterior-Sang Ju Yin

Mulberry and Chrysanthemum Decoction

INGREDIENTS:
Sang Ye (Mulberry leaf ) 7.5g
Ju Hua (Chrysanthemum flower) 3g
Ku Xin Ren (Bitter apricot kernel) 6g
Liang Qiao (Forsythia fruit) 5g
Bo He (Peppermint) 2.5g
Jie Geng (Platycodon root) 6g
Gan Cao (Licorice 2.5)g
Wei Gen (Seed rhizome) 6g
DIRECTIONS: Decoct the above herbs in water for oral administration.
EFFECTS: Expelling wind-heat and dispersing the lung to relieve cough. INDICATIONS: The beginning of
wind-warm syndrome manifested by cough, mild fever and thirst.
ANALYSIS OF FORMULA: This is a light formula of exterior-relieving with pungent cool herbs. Being bitter and
sweet flavors and cold nature, mulberry leaf expels evil and clear the lung to relieve cough. With sweet and bitter flavors
and slight cold nature chrysanthemum flower dispels wind and poison. They act coordinately as the main herbs by
inter-reinforcement. Forsythia fruit and peppermint are the assistant herbs to dispel wind eat and relieve the exterior. As
the adjuvant herbs, Ku Xin Ren (bitter apricot kernel) and Jie Geng (platycodon root) disperse the lung for relieving
cough by combination of ascending and descending, Wei Gen (seed rhizome) clears heat and promote production of
body fluid for assuaging thirst. Gan Cao (Licorice) acts as the dispatcher herb. By cooperating with Jie Geng
(platycodon root), it can also soothe the throat. Sang Ye (Modifications) for complicated conditions: adding Shi Gao
(gypsum) and Zhi Mu (anemarrhena rhizome) for husky breath like asthma due to dryness evil in the qi phase; adding
Huang Qin (scutellaria root) for the exuberant lung heat; and adding Tian Hua Feng (trichosanthes root) for heavy heat
in lung.
