Cyperus and Perilla Powder

INGREDIENTS:
Xiang Fu (Nutgrass flatsedge rhizome) 20g
Zi Su Ye(Perilla leaf) 20g
Chen Pi (Tangerine peel) 60g
Zhi Gan Cao (Roasted licorice) 30g
DIRECTIONS: Grinding the above herbs into rough powder and each time decocting 9 gram in water for oral
administration. If the above herbs are ground in fine powder, 6 gram is enough.
EFFECT: Regulating qi to relieve the exterior.
INDICATIONS: Exogenous attack of wind and cold with internal stagnation
of qi marked by chill, fever, headache, absence of sweat, stuffiness and fullness of chest and epigastrium, poor appetite,
thin and white coating.
ANALYSIS OF FORMULA: This is a representative formula for regulating qi to relieve the exterior. Zi Su Ye (Perilla
leaf) has pungent flavor and warm nature. It is the main herb to relieve the exterior and regulate qi for harmonizing the
middle. With pungent and bitter flavors and warm nature, acting as the assistant herb, Xiang Fu (Nutgrass flatsedge
rhizome) is the key herb for soothing the liver qi to relieve stagnation. Being similar in nature to Xiang Fu (Nutgrass
flavsedge rhizome), Chen Pi (Tangerine peel) regulates qi to strengthen spleen and dry dampness for harmonizing
stomach, acting as the adjuvant herb. Licorice is the dispatcher herb to harmonize all components of the formula.
In the present clinic, this formula is often used to treat influenza of gastrointestinal type pertaining to the exogenous
attack of wind and cold with qi stagnation.
ASSOCIATED FORMULAE:
(1) Ja Wei xiang su san
(Modified Cyperusand Perilla Powder, (Yi Xue  Xin Wu-Understandings of Medicine) :
Zi Su Ye (Perilla leaf) 5g, Chen Pi (angerine peel) 5g, Xiang Fu(Nutgrass flatsedge rhizome) 4g, Zhi Gan Cao (Roasted
licorice root) 2. 5g, Jing Jie (Schizonepeta) 3g, Qin Jiu (largeleaf gentian root) 3g, Fang Feng (ledebouriella root) 3g,
Mang Jing Zi (Chastetree fruit) 3g, Chuang Xiong (Chuanxiong rhizome) 1. 5g, Sheng Jiang (fresh ginger) 3 pes.
The above herbs should be decocted in water for oral administration. It induce perspiration for relieving the exterior, so
it is applied to seasonal exogenous attack manifested by headache with stiff neck, stuffy nose with discharge, pain of
body, fever with chill or aversion to wind, absence of sweat, thin and white coating, floating pulse.
(2) Shen Su Yin (Ginseng and Perilla Decoction  , (He Ji Ju Fang-Formulae of Peaceful Benevolent Dispensary) :
Hong Shen (Ginseng) 22g, Zi Su Ye (perilla leaf) 22g, Ge Geng (pueraria root) 22g, Qian Hu (peucedanum root)
22g,Zhi Ban Xia (pinellia tuber) 22g, Fu Ling (poria) 22g, Chen Pi (Tangerine peel) 15g, Gan Cao (licorice) 15g, Jie
Geng (platycodon root) 15g,Zhi Qiao (bitter orange) 15g, Mu Xiang (Aucklandia root) 15g.
Grinding the above herbs into powder. Each time only 12 gram is decocted in water with seven slices of fresh ginger
and one Chinese date for oral use. It is indicated to exogenous attack of wind and cold with interior phlegm and fluid
retention marked by chill, fever, headache, stuffy nose, cough with abundant expectoration, congestion and distress of
chest, white coating and feeble pulse.
NOTES: Jia Wei Xiang Su San (The Modified Cyperus and Perilla Powder) is just Xiang Su San (the Cyperus and
Perilla Powder) plus Jing Jie (schizonepeta),Qin Jiu (largeleaf gentian root), Fang Feng (ledebouriella root) , Chuang
Xiong (Chuanxiong rhizome), Mang Jing Zi (chastetree fruit) and fresh ginger. It is more powerful to induce perspiration
and relieve the exterior. Shen Su Yin (The Ginseng and Perilla Decoction) is Xiang Su San (Cyperus and Perilla
Powder) plus Fu Ling (poria), Qian Hu (peucedanum root), Ge Geng (pueraria root), Jie Geng (platycodon root), Zhi
Qiao (bitter orange), Mu Xiang (aucklandia root) and Hong Shen (ginseng), but removing Xiang Fu (Nutgrass flatsedge
rhizome). It is mainly to resolve phlegm, activate qi, invigorate qi and relieve the exterior..
