        9.1.   Herbal Formula  for Sedative with Heavy Herbs

These formulae are indicated to madness induced by fright, epilepsy and restlessness. Flaring of fire of both the heart and liver
lead to deficiency of yin blood and deranged mind, manifested by fright, madness, epilepsy and insomnia, etc.Sedative mind with
heavy sedation should be used, Zhu Sha (Cinnabar), Chi Shi (magnetite), Long Chi (dragon teeth) and Zhen Zhu Mu(macre)
etc., are usually used as principal herbs to suppress the hidden yang by heavy property. If flaring of fire consumes yin, Di Huang
(dried rehmania root), Shu Di Huang (prepared rehmania root) and Dang Gui (Chinese angelica root)  should be added to
nourish yin and blood. If the heart fire is exuberance, Huang Lian (coptis root) is usually added to clear away the heart-fire. The
main representative formulae are Zhu Sha An Shen Wan (Cinnabar Mind-Tranquilizing Pills),Zhen Zhu Mu Wan ( Macre Pills),
and Chi Zhu Wan (Magnetite and Cinnabar Pills).
