9.2   Herbal Formula  for Sedative with Strengthening herbs

These formulae are suitable for several palpitation with fright and insomnia due to deficient vexation. The heart houses
the mind, the etherial soul is stored in the liver and the kidney stores the will. The failure of the vitality and etherial soul to
be stored appears most commonly in the cases as blood deficiency of both the heart and liver due to chronic illness,
over-stress and over-worries, thus resulting in several palpitation with fright. Impairment of the heart and kidney may
cause insufficiency of yin-blood and internal disturbing of deficiency fire, leading to riot of heart spirit, manifested as
insomnia due to deficiency vexation, nocturnal emission, amnesia, red tongue with little coating, etc. Tranquilizing mind
with tonic herbs should be applied. The most frequently used herbs in these formulae are Di Huang  (dried rehmannia
root),  Zhi Ma (anemarrhena rhizome), Mai Dong (ophiopogon) and Dang Gui (Chinese angelica root) to replenish yin
and the blood, and Suan Zao Ren ( wild jujube seed), Bai Zi Ren (arborvitatae seed), Long Yan Rou (longan aril),
(Yuan Zhi (polygala root), Fo Xiao Mai (light wheat) and Wu Wei Zi (schisandra fruit) to nourish the heart and
tranquilize the mind. The main representative formulae in this category are Suan Zao Ren Tang (Wild juyube Seed
Decoction), Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan (Heaven King Heart-Nourishing Pellets) and Gan Mai Da Zao Tang (Licorice,
Wheat and Date Decoction).
