              7.4. Herbal Formula  for Strengthening Yin

These formulae are used mainly for syndrome of yin deficiency of the liver and kidney. The liver stores the blood,
controls the tendons, while the kidney stores the essence, dominates the bones. The essence and blood can engender
from each other, and the liver and kidney share the common source. Deficiency of the liver and kidney is usually
centered on two aspects: The first is insufficiency of the essence and blood due to impairment of genuine yin caused by
chronic diseases and over-strain with symptoms of emaciation, vertigo, tinnitus, amnesia, insomnia,
weakness and soreness in the waist and knees, red tongue with little coating, and thready and weak pulse. The therapy
of nourishing the liver and kidney is needed. The common herbs are Di Huang (dry rehmannia root), Shu Di Huang
(prepared rehmannia root),Gou Qi Zi ( wolfberry fruit), He Shou Wu (fleece-flower root), Shan Zhu Yu (dogwood
fruit), Sha Yao (Chinese Yam), Tian Dong (lucid asparagus root), Mai Dong (ophiopogon root), Sha Shen (glehnia
root), etc. , which have the effect of nourishing yin. Another one is internal disturbance of deficiency fire due to failure of
yin to control yang caused by yin deficiency of the liver and kidney manifested by tidal fever, night sweat, red lips, hectic
cheek, dry mouth and throat, sputum with bloody, insomnia due to deficient verxation, weakness and soreness in waist
and knees, emission, yellow urine, dry stool, red tongue with little coating, a thready and rapid pulse, etc.
The therapy of nourishing yin to lower the fire is indicated. On the basis of using herbs for nourishing yin, Zhi Mu (
anemarrhena rhizome) and HUang Bo (phellodendron bark) can be added to reduce deficiencyfire, and combine with
oyster shell, tortoise plastron to settle yang.
