Herbal Formula for Warming Middle to dispel cold- Xiao Jian Zhong Tang
Xiao Jian Zhong Tang
Minor Middle-Strengthening Decoction

INGREDIENTS:
Bai Shao (White peony root) l8g
Gui Zhi (Cassia twig) 9 g
Zhi Gan Cao (Roasted licorice root) 6g
Sheng Jiang (Fresh ginger) 109
Da Zao (Chinese date) 4pcs.
Yi Tang (Malt sugar) 30g
DIRECTIONS: Decoct the above herbs in water for oral administration with the exception of Yi Tang (malt sugar)
which should be infused in the decoction.
EFFECTS: Warming the middle to tonify deficiency, harmonizing the interior to relieve spasm.
INDICATIONS: Consumption syndrome manifested by abdominal spasm and occasinal pain which can be assuaged
by warming and pressing, pale tongue with white coating, thread, taut and loose pulse; or palpitation with vexation and
pale complexion; or fever with abdominal pain and poor appetite due to the yang deficiency.
ANAL YSIS OF FORMULA: This formula is composed of Gui Zhi Tang (Cassia Twig Decoction) plus Yi Tang (malt
sugar) with double dosage of Bai Shao (white peony root). Being sweet flavor and warm nature, acting on spleen, malt
sugar is the main herb to warm the middIe and tonify deficiency for harmonizing the interior and relieving spasm. By
combination with Yi Tang ( malt sugar), Gui Zhi (cassia twig) can warm the middle and tonify deficiency; Bai Shao
(white peony root) can harmonize the interior and relieve spasm. The combination of Gui Zhi (cassia twig) and Bai Shao
(white peony root) can also harmonize yin and yang, so that they both act as the assistant herbs. Sheng Jiang (Fresh
ginger) and Da Zao (Chinese date) act as the adjuvant herbs to nourish the source of generation and transformation as
well as harmonizing the nutrient and defensive qi. Zhi Gan Cao ( Licorice root) is the dispatcher herb which can not only
help malt sugar reinforce qi, but also nourish yin and harmonizing yang by cooperating with Gui Zhi (cassia twig) and Bai
Shao (white peony root) as well as harmonizing all the components.
This formula can be applied to gastric and duodenal ulcer, chronic hepatitis and neuroasthema with the above mentioned
symptoms.
ASSOCIATED FORMULAE FOR XIAO JIAN ZHONG TANG
. (1) Huang Qi Jian Zhong Tang (Astragalus Middle-Strengthening Decoction

INGREDIENTS: 9 gram of Huang Qi (astragalus root) is added to Xiao Jian Zhong Tang (minor middle
Strengthening Decoction). The directions are the same as that of Minor Middle Strengthening Decoction.
Effects: Warming the middle and reinforcing qi to harmonize the interior and to relieve spasm.
Indications: All the deficient manifestations due to consumption with abdominal pain and spasm.
(2) Dang Gui JIan Zhong Tang (Chinese Angelica Middle Strengthening Decoction)
SOURCE: Qian Jin Yi Fang (A Supplement to the Essential Formulae Worth A Thousand Gold):
INGREDIENTS: 12 gram of Chinese angelica root is added to Minor Middle Strengthening Decoction. The
directions are the same as that of Minor Middle-Strengthening Decoction.
Effects: Warming the middle and tonifying deficiency to relieve spasm and pain.
Indications: Deficient syndrome after delivery manifested by persistent abdominal pain with shortness of breath, or
cramping of the lower abdomen, abdominal pain radiating to the back, anorexia.
NOTES: Huang Qi JIan Zhong Tang (Astragalus Middle Strengthening Decoction) is applied to all deficiencies which
are more serious than those indicated by Xiao Jian Zhong Tang (Minor Middle Strengthening Decoction). Huang Qi
(Astragalus root) is used to strengthen the effect on reinforcing qi and tonifying deficiency. While Dang Gui Jian Zhong
Tang ( (Chinese Angelica Middle-Strengthening Decoction) stresses on nourishing and harmonizing blood, it is suitable
to abdominal pain after delivery due to the internal deficiency of the nutrient qi.
