13.2. Herbal Formula for Eliminating Dampness- Clearing Heat and Excreting Dampness
This kind of formula is indicated for exogenous attack due to dampness warm or for febrile disease due to summer heat
and dampness warm disease, jaundice, heat strangury and flaccid blockage syndrome etc. ,caused by internal
exuberance of dampness heat and downward flow of dampness heat. Dampness belongs to yin evil, while heat to yang
evil, combination of dampness and heat is just like oil mixed with the flour, which is characterized by unresolvable
accumulation, stickiness and protracting course of disease. Dampness heat may be caused by exogenous attack or by
internal injury, and its changes often center on the spleen and stomach. Although the patterns of dampness heat
syndrome are various, they are nothing more than three categories: Syndrome with more dampness than heat, syndrome
with more heat than dampness and syndrome with dampness equal to heat. If dampness is more prominent than heat,
resolving dampness is taken as principal therapy, Ku Xin Ren (apricot kernel), Jie Geng (platycodon root) and Huo
Xiang (agastache) are often used to disperse the upper-jiao; Kou Ren (Nutmeg), Hou Pu ( magnolia bark) and Zhi Ban
Xia (pinellia tuber) are prescribed to invigorate the middle-jiao; Yi Yi Ren (coi seed),Fi lIng ( poria) and Hua Shi (talc)
are applied to ooze dampness in the lower-jiao, so that the heat evil is isolated from dampness evil, and then some herbs
for clearing away and excreting dampness can be added to the formula to eliminate heat. If dampness is equal to heat,
the method of resolving dampness and clearing away heat should used. If heat is more prominent than dampness,
therapy of clearing away heat is taken as principal one. Meanwhile to resolve dampness is the second. For jaundic due
to dampness heat, Yin Chen (oriental wormwood), Zhi Zi (capejasmine fruit) and Huang Bo (phellodendron bar) are
usually used as principal herbs to excrete dampness and eliminate jaundice For diarrhea due to dampness heat, Huang
Qin (scutellaria root), Huang Lian (coptis toot), Chan Sha (silkworm dropping) and Bai Tou Weng ( pulsatilla root) can
be chosen as principal herbs to clear the intestines, dry dampness, detoxicate and arrest dysentery. For heat strangury
and blood strangury due to dampness heat in the lower-jiao, Qu Mai (Chinese pink herb),Bian Xu ( prostrate
knotweed),Shi Wei ( pyrrosia leaf) and Che Qian Zi (plantain seed) can be chosen as principal herbs to induce diuresis
for stranguria. For flaccid-blockage syndrome due to dampness heat, Cang Zhu (atractylodes rhizome) and Huang Bo
(phellodendron bark) can be chosen as principal herbs to clear away heat and dampness.
For the case with constipation, Da Huang (rhubarb) can be added to the formula to reduce heat and induce defecation.
If fumigation of dampness heat leads to sore throat, Lian Qiao (forythia fruit), She Gan (belamcanda rhizome) and Bo
He (peppermint) can be added to the formula to clear the throat. For flaccid-blockage syndrome with arthritic
extremities, Qin Jiu (largeleaf gentian root), Fang Ji (tetrandra root-replaced by Tong Cao), Shi Guo Luo (Retnervus
Luffae Fructusm), Hai Feng Teng (Caulis Piperis Kadsuraeand) and Luo Shi Teng (Caulis Trachelosperm) can be
added to the formula to clear collaterals and relieve pain. The main representative formulae are Yin Chen Hao Tang
(Oriental Wormwood Decoction), San Ren Tang (Decoction of Three Kinds of Kernel), Gan Lu Xiao Du Dan (Sweet
Dew Detoxicating Pillet) and Ba Zheng San (Eight Corrections Powder), Lian Pu Yin (Coptis and Magnolia Decoction)
and Er Mao San (Two Wonderful Herbs Powder).
