Herbal Medicine  for Anti-Rheumatics (Dispelling Wind and Dampness)

The herbal medicine with the effects of eliminating pathogenic wind and dampness and relieving arthralgia are called
anti-rheumatics.

Anti-rheumatics is pungent and bitter in flavour and warm in property, being capable of eliminating the wind-dampness
from joints, channels and collaterals,muscles, etc. Some of the herbal medicine have the effects of relaxing the muscles
and tendons, activating the channels and collaterals, relieving pain and strengthening the muscles and bones. The herbs
are effective against arthralgia due to wind-damness, difficulty in flexion and extension, spasm of muscles, hemiplegia,
deficiency of liver and kidney, asthenia of muscles and bones, etc. A few of the drugs are neutral or cool in property,
and are effective against arthralgia due to heat-dampness. Suitable drugs are selected according to the actual conditions
and rational application of compatibility is necessary. For instance, the characteristics and locations of different types of
arthralgia syndrome are not the same. If it is caused by wind-dampness, and cold, drugs for eliminating wind, coldness
and dampness are used in combination with is; if caused by heat arthralgia, herbal medicine for clearing heat and
eliminating dampness are also used together. In addition, it is also used in combination with other drugs such as those for
improving blood circulation and removing blood stasis, Qi and blood tonics (replenishing Qi and nourishing blood),
reinforcing the liver and kidney and strengthening the muscles and bones, etc.

For patients with chronic diseases, the herbal medicine is made into tincture or pills and powder for long-term use.
