This medical herb is the fruit of the annual herbaceous plant Xanthium sibiricum Patr. et widd. Of family Compositae,
distributed throughout China and mainly produced in Jiangxi, Shandong, Hubei and Jiangsu provinces. The fruits are
collected in autumn, dried in the sun and then stir-baked (Chaoor Zhi) to get rid of hard thorns for use.
Properties: The herb is pungent and bitter in flavour, warm in nature and acts on the lung channel. Being pungent and
warm for dispersion, and bitter and warm for removing dampness, it is good at expelling wind-cold-damp pathogens
from the exterior to clear channels and relieve pain, and it can remove pathogenic dampness and clear nasal passage. It
is indicated for arthralgia due to wind-dampness, headache with rhinorrhea of turbid discharge, headache due to
pathogenic wind-cold and other syndromes.
Effects: Dispersing wind-cold, clearing nasal congestion and removing wind dampness .
Indications:
1. The herb can be used in combination with Fang eng (ledebouriella root), Bai Zhi (dahurian angelica root) and other
herbs to treat wind-cold type of common cold, headache, and nasal obstruction; and with Xin Yin(magnolia flower), Bo
He (peppermint), Bai Zi (dahurian angelica root) and other herbs to treat headache with rhinorrhea of turbid discharge
and nasal obstruction without smelling.
2. To treat arthralgia due to wind-dampness and pain in the limbs and joints,
the herb is often used in combination with herbs for removing wind-dampness.
In addition, the herb can also be used to treat itching from German measles,
sarcoptidosis, tinea and leprosy.
Dosage and Administration: 3~10g. and suitable amount for external applications.
Precautions: Because it is toxic, the herb should not be used excessively.
Modern Researches: Xanthium decoction has the effects of arresting cough, exciting respiration, inhibiting the heart, to a
certain extent inhibiting Staphylococcus aureus, streptococcus B and Diplococcus pneumoniae, and fungus.

为菊科一年生草本植物苍耳 Xanthium sibiricum Patr. et widd.的果实。分布中国各地 ,主产于江西、山东、湖
北、江苏。秋季采收 , 晒干。炒去硬刺用。
【药性说明】味辛、苦 , 性温。归肺经。本品辛温发散 , 苦温除湿 , 善除肌表风寒湿邪而通络止痛 , 又能桂湿
浊、通鼻窍。适于风湿痹证、鼻渊头痛、风寒头痛等证。
【药物功效】散风寒 ,通鼻窍 ,祛风湿。
【临床应用】
1. 治风寒感冒 , 头痛鼻塞 , 可配防风、白芷等药 ; 治鼻渊头痛 , 不闻香臭、鼻塞不通 , 可配辛夷、薄荷、白芷
等药同用。
2. 治风湿痹证 , 肢节疼痛 , 常与祛风湿药同用。
此外 , 还可用治风疹搔痒、癣疥麻风。
【用量用法】 3~10 克。外用适量。
【使用注意】本品有毒 , 不宜过量服用。
【现代研究】煎剂有镇咳、兴奋呼吸作用 ; 对心脏有抑制作用 ; 对金黄色葡萄球菌、乙型链球菌、肺炎双球菌有一
定抑制作用 , 并有抗真菌作用。
