This herb is the whole plant (including root) of the perennial herb, Patrinia scabiosaefolia Fisch. ex Link. and P. villosa Juss.
(Family Lardizabalaceae), produced in the provinces that are located in the middle and lower reaches of the Changjiang River
valley. It is harvested in autumn, washed, dried in the shade, cut into segments, and used raw. It is also called Bai Jiang by
some of TCM practitioners.
Properties: Being pungent and bitter in flavour, slightly cold in nature, it acts on the stomach, large intestine, and liver
channels. The pungent flavour of the herb has the effect of dispersing, the bitter purging and the slightly cold properties in
benefit of clearing away heat. The herb possesses the functions of detoxicating, dissipating stasis and boils and draining pus.
So it is good at treating the accumulation of noxious heat in the large intestine, carbuncles and abscesses formed by pathogenic
transformation, acute appendicitis, and abdominal pain, and also at the stagnation of heat in the lung, hence possessing a
curative effect on pulmonary abscess with purulent sputum. The herb is also indicated for abdominal pain due to blood stasis
and suppurative infections caused by noxious heat because of its functions of dissipating stasis and detoxicating.
Effects: Clearing away heat, detoxicating, resolving boils, draining pus, promoting blood circulation and resolving blood stasis.
Indications:
1. For acute appendicitig at the early stage, i. e. before pus formation, it is used in combination with Pu Gong Ying (dandelion
herb), Mu Dan Pi (peony bark), and Tao Ren (peach kernel) to detoxicate, dissipate stasis, and subdue the swellings. If the
abscess of the appendicitis has been formed, it is used with Yi Yi Ren (coix seed) and Zhi Fu Zi (prepared aconite root).
2. In cases of pulmonary abscess with purulent sputum and hematemesis, it is used in combination with Yi Mu Cao
(motherwon), Pu HUang ( cattail pollen), and Wu Ling Zhi (trogopterus dung), the herbs for dissipating stasis and relieving
pain.
Dosage and Administration: 6~15g.
Modern Researches: The herb. Patrinia scabiosaefolia, is antibacterial against Staphylococcus aureus. Shigella dysenteriae,
Salmonella typhi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli. and possesses antiviral effects as well. It has the functions of
promoting the regeneration of liver cells, preventing cell degeneration, and improving the functions of liver. It may induce
