This herb is the whole plant of the annual herb, Andrographis paniculata (Burm. f.) Nees (Family Acanthaceae). It is originally
yielded in the subtropical zones. It had been cultivated nowadays in South, East and Southwest China. The herb of better
quality is collected in autumn when it is blooming. It is cut into segments, dried in sunlight, and used raw or fresh. It is also
called Yi JIan Xi or Gan Lan Lian by some TCM practitioners.
Properties: Bitterness in flavour, coldness in nature, it acts on the lung, stomach, large intestine, and small intestine channels.
The bitter and cold properties clear away heat, detoxicate and eliminate dampness. The herb has the functions of removing the
excessive fire and noxious heat from the lung and stomach, as well as removing the damp heat pathogens in the large intestine.
So all of the syndromes of cough due to lung heat, swollen throat due to stomach fire, diarrhea due to dampness heat, and
stranguria can be treated with this herb.
Effects: Clearing away heat, detoxicating, removing dampness by diuresis  for treating stranguria.
Indications:
1.
For suppurative infections caused by noxious heat, swollen throat and canker sores in the mouth, It is used in combination
with the heat-clearing and detoxicating herbs, such as Jin Yin Hua (honeysuckle flower), Zhi Zi (capejasmine fruit) and Ye Ju
Hua (wild chrysanthemurn flower). In cases of cough due to lung heat, or acute appendicitis and cough with purulent sputum,
it is used in combination with the hers for removing heat from the lung, relieving cough, resolving boils and draining pus, such
as Huang Qin (scutellaria root), Sang Bai Pi (mulberry bark), Yu Xin Cao (houttuynia) and Dong Gua ren (waxgourd kernel).
2. For dysentery caused by dampness heat, diarrhea with purulent and bloody stool, it is used in combination with the clearing
heat and drying dampness herbs, such as Huang Lian (coptis root) and Huang Bo (phellodendron bark). In cases of stranguria
due to dampness heat, it is used in combination with the herbs for diuresis and treating stranguria, such as Che Qian Zi
(plantain seed), Shi Wei (pyrrosia leaf), and Bian Xu (prostrate knot weed) .
In addition, it can also be used to treat snakebite.
Dosage and Administration: 6~15 g. It is commonly used in the forms of pills, powder and tablets.
Modern Researches: The decoction of the herb is antibacterial in varying degrees against Staphylococcus aureus,
Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus vulgaris, Diplococcus pneumoniae, hemolytic streptococci, Shigella dysenteriae and
Salmonella typhi. It also possesses the actions of improving the phagocytosis of white blood cells, antipyretic, anti-
inflammatory, anti-venom and anti-muscarinic, and interrupting the pregnancy.
