This herb This drug is the leaves or the twigs of the biennial herb, Isatis tinctoria L. , I. indigotica (Family Cruciferae), or the
perennial herb, Baphicacanthus cusia Bremeck. < Family Acantha-ceae) , the annual herb, Polygonum tinctori1Jm Ait. (Family
Polygo naceae) , and the deciduous shrub, Clerodendron cytophyllum Turcz. <Family Verbenaceae). 1. tinctoria, produced
mainly in the provinces of Jiangsu, Anhui, Hebei, Henan and Zhejiang. B. cusia is mainly produced in the provinces of Fujian,
Jiangxi, and Guangxi Zhuang -Nationality Autonomous Re- gion. P. tinctorium is mainly produced in Hebei and Shanxi
Provinces. Their leaves are collected in summer and autumn, dried in sunlight and used unprepared or fresh.
Properties: Bitter and salty in flavour, cold in nature, it acts on the heart, lung and stomach channels. The bitter and cold
properties clear away heat and the salty enters and acts in the blood division. The  herb can clear away the nox- ious heat and
excessive fire in the blood division and is especially good at removing blood-heat and ecchymoses. It is therefore indicated for
the syndromes of the invasion of ying and blood division by heat, intense heat in both Qi and blood divi- sion, maculas caused
by virulent pathogen heat, swollen throat and canker sores in the mouth.
Effects: Clearing away heat, detoxicating, removing blood heat and ecchymoses
Indication:
1. For the syndromes  of heat invasion of ying and blood division and intense heat in both qi and blood division, manifested by
high fever and delirium, masculas and eruptions, hematemesis and epistasis, it is used in combination with the blood-cooling
and detoxicating herbs, as Xi Jiao (rhinoceros horn) and Zhi Zi (capejasmine fruit).
2. For swollen and sore throat, canker sores in the mouth, skin and external diseases caused by excessive fire and noxious heat
dormant in the body, it is used in combination with the heat-clearing and detoxicating drugs, such as ZXuan Shen (scrophularia
root), HUang Lian (coptis root), Pu Gong Yin (dandelion herb). etc.
In addition, in clinical practice this herb was used in recent years to cure viral diseases, as influenza, measles, and hepatitis.
Dosage and Administration: 10~15 g .
Modern Researches: Clerodendron cytophyll urn is bactericidal to Shigella dysenteriae, Neissria meningitidis, and is capable
of killing Leptospira. Polygonum tinctorium possesses the functions of inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus au- reus,
enhancing the phagocytosis of leukocytes, decreasing the skin vascular per- meability and can act as antiarthritic and
antipyretic agents. Isatis tinctoria and Baphicacanthus cusia have certain antibacterial activity on Staphylococcus aureus and
hemolytic streptococci. This herb can inhibit hepatitis surface antigen and Asian A influenza virus. In short, the herb possesses
antibacterial, antiviral, anti-pyretic, anti-inflammatory, and immunity enhancing effects.

                                      (Radix Isαtidis)
This herb is the root of Isatis indigotica Fort. (Family Cruciferae). It is bitter in flavour, cold in property. It has the effects of
clearing away heat, detoxicating, removing heat from the blood and relieving sore throat. This herb is indicated for epidemic
febrile diseases, masculas and eruptions, sores and measles. It is especially being good at relieving the wind warm pathogen
and the seasonal noxious agents. So it is always an important medicine for treating sore throat caused by wind warm pathogen
