Forsythia Fruit
                        Fructus Forsythiae

This herb is the fruit of the deciduous shrub, Forsythia suspensa (Thunb. ) vahJ (Family Oleaceae), produced in the Northeast
and North China and in the area between Changjiang River valley and Yunnan Province. Both wild and cultvated plants can be
used as medicines. The fruit collected in early September when it is beginning to ripen is called green forsythia, and the
collected in early October when it is fully ripe is called yellow forsythia fruit. The green forsythia fruits are steamed and dried
in sunlight after harvested. To screen out the seed is for use as forsythia core. Qing Qiao (green forsythia fruits) are
considered better medicinally and are used unprepared.
Properties: Being bitter in flavour, slightly cold in nature, it acts on the lung, heart and gallbladder channels. The cold property
clears away heat and the bitter flavour dissolves lumps. so it is good at clearing away the excessive fire in the heart channel,
detoxicating and subduing swellings. It is indicated for the syndromes of exopathogenic, invasion of the ying division and
pericardium, especially the suppurative infections on bodys surface. Therefore, it got the name, "the holy medicine for the
doctors to cure sores. " In addition, owing to the qualities of light and loose, it can cool and dispel the exopathogenic wind
heat, or treat epidemic febrile diseases at the early stage when the pathogenic factors are still lingering in the Wei stage.
Effects: Clearing away heat, detoxicating, subduing swellings, dissolving lumps and dispelling wind heat.
Indications:
1. For treating suppurative infections on body surface caused by noxious heat, acute mastitis, and furunculosis, it is often used
in combination with heat- clearing and detoxicating drugs, such as Jin Yin Hua (honeysuckle flower), Zhi Zi (capejasmine
fruit), and HUang Lian (coptis root). In cases of scrofula and subcutaneous nodule, it may be used in combination with Xia Ku
Cao (prunella spike), Mu Li (oyster shell) and Xuan Shen (scrophularia root), and other drugs for eliminating scrofula and
dissolving lumps.
2. For the exopathogenic wind heat affection, or the epidemic febrile diseases at the early stage, it is often used in combination
with the diaphoretics which is pungent in flavour and cool in nature, such as Bo He (pepper mint) and Niu BAng Zi (arctium
fruit). In cases of pathogenic heat invasion of ying stage, high fever, delirium, deep red and dry tongue, it is often used in
combination with Xi Jiao (rhinoceros horn), Mai Dong (ophiopogon root), and Xuan Shen (scrophularia root), or other
clearing heat and cooling blood herbs.
Dosage and Administration: 6~15 g .
Modern Researches: The forsythia fruit possesses broad spectral antibacterial effects. It inhibits the growth of various
pathogenic bacteria and influenza virus. It is also antimycotic and its ethanol extract is spirocheticidal. The effective
component of the antibacterial activity is forsythol. The oleanolic acid contained in the ruit has cordial, diuretic, and
hypotensive effects. The vitamin P in the fruit is ble to decrease the vascular permeability and fragility to  prevent oozing of
blood. The decoction of the herb is an antemetic agent as well.
