This herb is the whole plant of the perennial herb, Taraxacum mongolicum Hand. -Mazz. (Family Compositae) , and of many
others belonging to the same Genus, distributed widely throughout China. It is collected in summer and autumn, dried in
sunlight after washing thoroughly. The fresh or unprepared herb n be used. It is called Gong Ying or Huang Huang Di Ding by
some of TCM practitioners.
Properties: Sweet and bitter in flavour, cold in nature, it acts on the liver nd stomach channels. The sweet and cold properties
of this herb clear away heat nd detoxicate poisons, and the bitter and cold properties subdue swellings and dissolve lumps. All
of the sores and abscesses, such as acute mastitis, furunculosis, pulmonary abscess and acute appendicitis can be cured with
this herb. It is particularly indicated for the acute mastitis. In addition, the herb can also be used to eliminate dampness heat, so
as to treat stranguria due to dampness heat and jaundice.
Effects: Clearing away heat, detoxicating, subduing swellings, or removing dampness by diuresis for treating stranguria.I
Indications:
1. For mastitis with swelling and pain, or sores and abscesses, it is used in combination with the herbs for clearing away heat,
detoxicating, subduing swellings, and dissolving lumps, such as Jin Yin Hua (honeysuckle flower), Zi Hua Di Ding (viola herb)
and Ye Ju Hua (wild hrysanthemum flower). In cases of acute appendicitis and abdominal pain, it is used with Da Huang
(rhubarb) and Tao ren (peach kernel), or other detoxication and pusevacuating herbs.
2. For stranguria caused by heat with painful discharge, it is used in combination with diuretic and urinary aseptic medicines,
such as Zhi Zi (capejasmine fruit), Che Qian Zi (plan tain seed) and Tong Cao (ricepaper pith). In cases of jaundice due to
dampness heat, it is used with Yin Chen (oriental wormwood) and Yu Jin (curcuma root), or other cholangogues.
Dosage and Administration: 10~30g. Double the dose for fresh herb. Quanturn satis when applied externally.
Modern Researches: This herb possesses potent bactericidal action on Staph- ylococcus aureus and hemolytic streptococci,
and certain effectiveness on Diplo- coccus pneumoniae and Neisseria meningitidis. It also inhibits some viruses, dermatophytes
