                                          Belamcanda (Blackberry lily) Rhizome
                                                Rhizoma Belamcandae


This herb is the rhizome of the perennial herb, Belamcanda chinensis (L.) DC (Family Iridacea , mainly produced in the
provinces of Hubei, Henan,  jiangsu and Anhui. It can be collected all the year. The best quality is obtained when it is harvested
in autumn by remouing the stem and fibrous rootlet. It is dried after washing and cut into slices.
Properties: Being bitter in flavour, cold in nature, it acts on the lung chan- nel. The bitter and the cold properties can clear
a_ay heat and detoxicate. It is good at removing the phlegm fire in the lung. detoxicating, and relieving sore throat. So it is
indicated for sore throat caused by upward flaring of phlegm-fire.
And it is often used to treat cough and dyspnea caused by the retention of phlegm
and fluid, by means of its expectorant and lumps dissolving effects.        I
Effects: Clearing away heat, detoxicating, expelling phlegm and relieving sore throat.        .
Indications: .
1. For the upward flaring of phlegm-fire and sore throat, it is used in combination with the drugs for removing lung-heat,
expelling phlegm and relieving sore throat, such as scutellaria root, platycodon root, fritillary bulb and liquorice.
2. For cough due to phlegm-heat, it is used in combination with mulberry bark, trichosanthes fruit, fritillary bulb, the drugs for
removing heat and resol- ving phlegm. In cases of cough and dyspnea due to cold-phlegm with thin whitish
sputum, it is used with drugs for warming the lung to reduce watery phlegm. such as pinella tuber, asarum herb (wild ginger),
etc.
Dosage and Administration: 6~10 g .
Modern Researches:The belamcanda rhizome is markedly effective in inhibiting common pathogenic dermatophytes. It also
possesses inhibitory efficacy a- gainst the pathogenic viruses of common cold and pharyngolaryngeal diseases, adenovirus,
