This medical herb is the rhizome of the perennial plant, Coptis chinensis Franch. or C. detoidea C. Y. Chen et Hsiao, or C.
teetoides C. Y. Cheng (Family Ranunculacea ) , yielded mainly in the provinces of Yunnan and Sichuan of Chian. Rhizomes
from the plants grown 5~7 years are collected in autumn, dried after getting rid of the rootlets, and used raw or stir-baked
with ginger juice, wine or the infusion of evodia fruit. It is called Chuan Lian which grows in Sichuan province.
Properties: Being bitter in flavour, cold in nature, it acts on the heart, liver, gallbladder, spleen, stomach, and large intestine
channels. The herb is very strong in clearing heat and dampness and neutralizing toxins by the properties of extremely bitter
and cold. It is particularly effective in clearing away the heat in heart and middle-jiao, and purging the fire in liver as well. For
this reason, it is chiefly indicated for syndromes of excessive fire in the heart and stomach channels, diarrhea due to damp-heat
and superficial suppurative infections caused by the noxious heat.
Effects: Clearing away heat, dampness, and fire, and removing toxins.
Indications:
1. For treating the extraneous pathogenic febrile diseases which are belonging to the
type of excessive heat in the blood, manifested as dysphoria with high fever, coma and delirium, it is used in combination with
Xi Jiao (rhinoceros horn) and Di Huang (rehmannia root) to clear heat from the blood and the heart-heat, and alleviates
restlessness. In cases of excessive pathogenic fire manifested as dysphoria, insomnia, canker sores in the mouth, it is used in
combination with Zhu Sha (cinnabar) and Di Huang (rehmannia root) known as Zhusha Anshen Wan (Cinnabar Sedative Bolus)
to lessen palpitation and aanquilize the mind.
2. For treating the syndrome of excessive fire in the stomach, poor appetite,
nausea, toothache due to stomach-fire, and polyorexia, it is used in combination with Si Gao (gypsum),Zhu Ru (bamboo
shavings) to clear the stomach-fire and arrest vomiting. In cases of damp-heat in large intestine, diarrhea with abdominal pain,
tenesmus, it is used in combination with Huang Qin (scutellaria root), Mu Xiang (aucklandia root) and Dang Gui (Chinese
angelica root) known as Shaoyao Tang (Decoction of Peony) to clear away heat, remove dampness, promote the Qi
circulation.
3. For treating superficial suppurative infections, such as sores, carbuncles,tilruncles and boils, septicemia induced by
furunculosis, it is used in combination with Lian Qiao (forsythia fruit), Pu Gong Yin (dandelion herb) and Huang Qin
(scutellaria root) to clear away heat, removing toxins, and resolves swelling and lumps.
Furthermore, owing to the function of clearing the lier-fire, the preparation
is also indicated for the stomach disease caused by liver fire, hypochondriac pain, acid gurgitation, and conjunctival congestion
caused by liver`heat.
Dosage and Administration: 2~10g. Use the preparation of stir-baked with
ginger juice for arresting vomiting. The preparation of wine stir-baked is good at clearing noxious heat in the upper-jiao.
Precautions: This herb is extremely bitter and cold, therefore it should not be given in large amount or over a long period so as
to avoid hurt of spleen and stomach. Because of the bitter and dryness properties, it is proper to be used in combination with
the drugs for reinforcing Yin to treat the patients with extremely heat due to Yin deficiency.
Modern Researches: The coptis root has a very broad spectrum of bacteriostatic effect. It significantly inhibits the growth of
Shigella dysenteriae, Salmonella typhi, etc. as well as the growth of pathogenic dermatophytes. It possesses hypotensive,
cholagogic, antipyretic, sedative, analgesic, antiuretic, and local anaesthetic effects. Besides, it can relaxes the vascular smooth
muscle, but it excites the smooth muscles of uteri, bladder and gastrointestinal tract. (Aidus & E-fong Herbal Solution)
黄连《本经》
为毛莨科多年生草本植物黄连 Coptis chinesis Franch. 三角叶黄连 C. deltoi-dea C. Y. Cheng. Et Hsian 或云连
C. teetoides C. Y. Chehg. 的根茎。主产于四川、云南。秋季采挖 5~7 年的植株 , 除去菌叶、须根 , 干燥。生用或
清炒、姜炒、酒炒、吴茱萸水炒用。
【药性说明】味苦 , 性寒。归心、肝、胆、脾、胃、大肠经。本品大苦大寒 , 清热燥湿 , 解毒之力颇强 , 尤其善清心
与中焦之热 , 兼泻肝火。故为心经火盛、胃经实火、湿热泻痢及热毒疮痛等证之要药。
【 药物功效】清热燥湿 , 泻火解毒。
【临床应用】
1. 用治外感热病 , 高热心烦 , 神昏谵语 , 属血分实热者 , 常配犀角、生地以清热凉血、清心除烦 ; 若心火内盛 , 心
烦不眠 , 口舌生疮 , 可配朱砂、生地 , 以清降心火 , 镇心安神 , 如朱砂安神丸。
2. 用治胃火亢盛 , 食少呕吐 , 或胃火牙痛 , 以及消谷善饥等证 , 配伍石膏、竹茹以清胃止 呕, 治大肠湿热 , 泻痢腹
痛 , 里急后重 , 配伍黄苓、木香、当归等药 , 以清热燥湿、和血行气 , 如芍药汤。
3. 治热毒疮瘤 , 痛肿疗毒 , 配连翘、公英、黄苓以清热解毒 , 消肿散结。
此外 , 本品兼清肝火 , 又治肝火犯胃、胁痛吞酸及肝热目赤等证。
【用量用法】 2~10 克。止呕宜姜汁炒用 , 酒炒善除上焦热毒。
【使用注意】本品大苦大寒 , 使用过量或久服宜损伤脾胃 , 应予注意。本品苦燥伤阴 , 阴
虚火盛者 , 应配伍养阴药同用。
【现代研究】黄连有很广的抗菌范围 , 对痢疾杆菌、伤寒杆菌等多种细菌有较显著的抑制 作用 ; 对多种致病性皮肤真
菌 , 也有抑制作用。又有降压、利胆、解热、镇静、镇痛、抗利尿、局部 麻醉等作用。此外 ,对血管平滑肌有松弛作
用 , 但对子宫、膀胱、胃肠道平滑肌都呈兴奋作用。
