                    Scutellaria Root
                  Radix Scutellariae

This medical herb is the root of the perennial herb, Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi (Family Labiatae), mainly produced in the
provinces of Hebei, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Henan, and Shanxi of China. The most abundant yield is in Shanxi Province and
that of the best quality is produced in Chengde City, Hebei Province. It is dug out and collected in spring or autumn, dried after
removing the stems and rootlets, sliced after steamed or soaked in boiling water. Its raw or stir-baked with wine or stir-baked
to charcoal are used often.

Properties: Bitterness in flavour, coldness in nature, it acts on the lung, large intestine, small intestine, heart, stomach, and
gallbladder channels. The cold property clears heat, the bitter flavour eliminates dampness and is good at clearing the heat in
lung and upper Jiao, and can prevent miscarriage as well. It is used to treat the syndromes of cough caused by lung-heat, heat
lingering in the upper Jiao, diarrhea due to dampness-heat, and threatened abortion.

Effects: clearing heat and fire, eliminating dampness, detoxicating, stopping
bleeding and preventing miscarriage.

Indications:

1. For treating retention of dampness in the middle-jiao, yellow and greasy tongue coating, poor appetite and dyspepsia and
stuffiness, it is used in combination with Huang lian (coptis root) and Chen Pi (tangerine peel) to clear heat and dampness,
regulate the functions of spleen and stomach. For treating jaundice due to damp-heat in the liver and gallbladder, it is used in
combination with Yin Chen (oriental wormwood), Zhi Zi (capejasmine fruit) to normalize gallbladder function and cure
jaundice. In case of diarrhea caused by damp-heat in the large intestine, it is used in combination with Huang Lian (coptis root)
and Mu Xiang (aucklandia root) to clear away heat in the intestine and cure dysentery.

2. For treating cough due to heat in the lung, yellow and greasy sputum, it is used in combination with Sang Bai Pi (mulberry
bark) and Zhi Mu (ophiopagon root) to clear lung-heat, resolve phlegm and cough, as in Qing Fei Tang (Decoction for Clearing
Lung Heat). In cases of febrile diseases affected by exogenous pathogens, hematemesis, epistaxis due to flooding of blood
heat, it is used in combination with Di Huang (rehmannia) and Bai Mao Gen (bupleurum root) to treat Shaoyang disease and
reduce cold and heat, known as Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Decoction of Bupleurum).

3. For treating sore throat, conjunctival congestion and superficial suppurative infections caused by excessive fire and noxious
heat, it is used in combination with Huang Liann (coptis root),Zhi Zi (capejasmine fruit) and Lian Qiao (forsythia fruit) to clear  
heat, remove toxins and resolve swelling and mass.

Furthermore, it can be also used to treat the heat syndrome during pregnancy and threatened abortion.

Dosage and Administration: 3~lOg. Stir-baked to charcoal for hemataxis,stir-baked with wine for clearing heat in the upper-
jiao and hot flush on head and face.

Modern Researches : the decoction of the herb has broad spectral antibacterial effect against pathogenic bacteria such as
Salmonella typhi, Shigella dysenteriae, staphylococci, etc. It also processes antipyretic, hypotensive, diuretic, sedative, and
cholagogic effects. and it can decrease the capillary permeability and inhibit peristalsis as well.(Aidus & E-fong Herbal Solution)


                        黄苓《本经》

为唇形科多年生草本植物黄苓 Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi 的根。主产于河北、山西、 内蒙古、河南及陕西等
地。以山西产量最多 , 河北承德产者质量最佳。春秋两季采挖。除去残茎、须根 , 晒干。蒸透或开水润透切片。生用
,酒炒或炒炭用。

【药性说明】味苦 , 性寒。归肺、大肠、小肠、心、胃、胆经。本品性寒清热 , 苦能燥湿 .善清肺与上焦之热 , 兼可
安胎。适用于肺热咳嗽、上焦郁热、湿热泻病、胎动不安等证。

【药物功效】清热燥湿 , 泻火解毒 , 止血安胎。

【临床应用】

1. 治湿阻中焦,舌苔黄腻 ,纳呆院痞 , 配黄连 , 陈皮同用 , 以清热燥湿 , 调中和胃 ; 治肝胆湿热发黄 , 配茵陈、栀子以
利胆退黄 ; 治大肠湿热泻痢, 配黄连、木香以清肠治痢。

2. 治肺热咳嗽 , 痰黄黏稠 , 配桑白皮、知母以清肺化痰止咳 , 如清肺汤; 治外感热病 , 血热妄行引起的吐衄出血等证
, 配生地、白茅根以凉血止血 ; 治邪犯少阳 , 寒热往来者 , 配柴胡和解少阳以退寒热 , 如小柴胡汤。

3. 用治实火热毒引起的咽肿目赤、热毒疮痈 , 配黄连、栀子、连翘等 , 以清热解毒 , 消肿散结。

此外 , 还可用治胎动不安兼有热象者。

【用量用法】 3~10 克 , 止血宜炒炭用 , 酒炒善清上焦头面之热。

【现代研究】黄苓煎剂在体外呈广谱抗菌作用 , 对伤寒杆菌、病疾杆菌、葡萄球菌等多种细菌均有抑制作用。此外 ,
还有解热、降压、利尿、镇静、利胆、降低毛细血管通透性 ,以及抑制肠管蠕动等作用。
