This herb is the bark of the deciduous tree, Fraxinus rhynchophylla Hance. F. bungeana DC. (Family Oleaceae), produced in
the provinces of Jilin, Liaoning and Henan, collected in spring and autumn, peeled off the bark and dried in the sunlight, used
raw.
Properites: Being Bitter and puckery in flavour, cold in nature, it acts on the liver, gallbladder, and large intestine channels.
The properties of bitter and cold benefit to clear away heat and purge fire. The puckery flavour acts as astringent and
antidiarrheal agents. Owing to the functions of clearing away heat, purging liver-fire and improving the vision, the herb is
indicated for excessive fire in the liver channel, conjunctival congestion and headache. It is often used in the cases of
dysentery due to damp-heat pathogen, because it also has the effect of clearing away the intestinal heat and purging fire,
astringing intestine so as to alleviate diarrhea.
Effects: Clearing away heat, detoxicating, removing excessive heat from liver to improve the vision, removing dampness, and
curing diarrhea.
Indications:
1. For treating dysentery with bloody stool, it is used in combination with Huang Lian (coptis root), Huang Bo (phellodendron
bark) and Bai Tou Weng (pulsatilla root) to clear away heat, detoxicate, remove heat from blood, and cure dysentery. In case
of profuse leukorrhea due to damp-heat, it is used in combination with the herbs for clearing heat, removing dampness and
anti-leukorrhea, such as Huang Bo (phellodendron bark), Cang Zhu (atractylodes rhizome). and Chu Pi (ailanthus bark).
2. For treating the syndromes of the flaming-up of the liver fire, conjunctival congestion, swellings and pain in the eyes,
nebula, it is used in combination with the herbs for removing intensive heat from the liver and improving vision. such as Chan
Tu (cicada slough), Ju Hua (chrysanthemum flower) and Huang Lian (coptis root).
Dosage and Administration: 3~12g.
Modern Researches: The decoction of the herb has antibacterial activity against Staphy lococcus aureus, Shigella dysenteriae
and Escherichia coli. The components aesculin and aesculetin possess the anti-inflammatory effect and the former can also
