Herbal Medicine for Dispelling Phlegm
Herbs having mainly the effects of clearing phlegm, relieving cough and asthma are called phlegm-clearing,
cough-relieving and anti-asthma herbal medication.
According to the different properties of drugs and the main syndromes treated for, these drugs can be classified into
three types: herbs resolving phlegm syndrome due to cold; herbs clearing heat and phlegm; herbs relieving cough and
asthma. They are indicated in various phlegm syndromes including that due to cold, damp, heat, wind and other types of
cough, asthma, caused by exopathogens, internal injury and syndromes related to cough, including scrofula, goiter,
occult boil and multiple abscesses, and others.
When these herbs are used in cough due to exopathogens they should be used in combination with diaphoretics; in
cough due to consumption, with tonics; in cold-phlegm and damp-phlegm, with herbal medicine warming the lung and
strengthening the spleen; in cough and asthma due to phlegm-heat, with heat and fire clearing.
Those herbs warm and dry in nature are contraindicated in dry cough with bleeding due to Yin injury, while those herbs
cold and moistening in nature are contraindicated in syndromes of cold-phlegm and damp phlegm. (Aidus & E-fong
