Herbal Medicine  for Hemostatics

Herbs with the effects of stopping all kinds of internal and external bleeding are called hemostatics.

With the effects of stopping bleeding by clearing heat from blood, byastringency, by resolving blood stasis or by
warming the channels respectively, hemostatics are indicated for epistaxis, hemoptysis, haematemesis, hematechezia ,
metrorrhagia and metrostaxis, traumatic bleeding and other kinds of bleeding.

Corresponding hemostatics should be selectively used according to the cause of bleeding and in reasonable
compatibility with other drugs. Hemostatics should be used in combination with herbs for clearing heat from blood to
treat bleeding due to blood heat; with herbs for supplementing Qi and warming Yang to treat bleeding due to cold of
insufficiency type; and with herbs for promoting circulation of Qi and removing blood stasis to treat bleeding with blood
stasis. Exhaustion of Qi due to bleeding caused by hematorrhea should be treated not solely with hemostatics but mainly
with herbs for supplementing Qi and preventing exhaustion of Qi.

Inappropriate use of hemostatics tends to cause blood stasis. Therefore, it should be prevented from blood stasis when
the hemostatics are used. To treat bleeding with blood stasis, it is inadvisable to solely or excessively use drugs for
stopping bleeding by clearing heat from the blood or by astringency. (Aidus & E-fong Herbal Solution)
