Herbal Medicine  for Inducing Diuresis and Removing Dampness

Herbs  with the main effects of clearing water passage and removing water dampness are called diuretic and
dispelling dampness medications.

Herbs of this kind mostly are sweet and tasteless in flavour in favour of inducing diuresis and excreting dampness,
bitter in taste and cold in nature for clearing  internal heat, and act on the urinary bladder, spleen and kidney channels.
They have the effects of inducing diuresis to alleviate edema, removing fire to treat stranguria, and excreting dampness to
treat jaundice. These drugs are indicated for water dampness retention dysuria, edema, phlegm retention, stranguria,
jaundice, dampness warm and other syndromes.

Herbs of this kind should be used in combination with drugs for supplementing Qi and warming Yang to treat edema
due to deficiency of Qi and Yang; with the herbs for clearing heat to treat stranguria due to heat; with drugs for
removing heat from the blood and arresting bleeding to treat stranguria with blood; and with drugs for softening hard
masses and removing urinary calculus to treat stranguria from urolithiasis. To treat excess syndrome of edema,
abdominal distention d fullness, and obstruction of urination and defecation, drastic hydrogagues should be mainly used.

Herbs for inducing diuresis and excreting dampness should be used carefully  in patients with Yin-deficiency, because
