Herbal Medicine for Inducing Diuresis and Removing Dampness- Hua Shi

This herbal medicine is the lump of talc, an ore of silicate, mainly containing aquo- magnesium silicate. It is produced in Shan
Dong, Jiang Xi, Jiang Su, Shaan Xi, Shan Xi and other provinces of China. After it is exploited, cleared of mud and other
stone, smashed or pulverized with grinder, and sieved into talc powder. A refined powder of the herb medicine called Fei
Huashi, is made in an ancient procedure as follows: The stone mixed with water is ground into granules. After an adequate
amount of water is added and stirred, the sediment of coarse granules is removed by decanting the supernatant suspension,
from which the refined powder is precipitated, separated and dried.
Properties: The herbal medicine is sweet and tasteless in flavour, cold in nature, and acts on the stomach and urinary bladder
channels. Being sweet and tasteless for inducing diuresis and excreting dampness, cold for clearing fever, and lubrication for
clearing obstruction, talc mainly clears pathogenic dampness heat in the urinary bladder to induce diuresis, treat stranguria,
remove urinary calculus and alleviate pain. It is often used to treat stranguria due to heat, and stranguria caused by urinary
stone. Being sweet and cold for clearing heat and inducing diuresis, it can also relieve summer heat and thirst.
Effects: Treating stranguria, removing urinary calculus, clearing fever and summer heat.
Indications:

The herbal medicine is often used in combination with Mu Tong (manshurian aristolochia stem), Che Qian Zi (plantain seed)
and other herbs for inducing diuresis and treating stranguria, to treat dampness heat in the urinary bladder and dribbling
urination with pain; and with Hai Jin Sha (climbing fern), JIn Qian Cao (lysimachia) and other herbs for treating stranguria,
softening lumps and removing urinary calculus, such as Er Jin Pai Shi Tang , to treat stranguria caused by urinary stone.
2. It is often used in combination with liquorice for clearing summer heat, relieving vexation, inducing diuresis and treating
stranguria, such as Liu Yi San, to treat summer heat due to exopathy, vexation, thirst and scanty dark urine; and with Che Qian
Cao (plantain seed), Bai Bian Dou (white hyacinth dolichos bean) and other drugs for remvving dampness and arresting
diarrhea, to treat diarrhea due to summer heat.
In addition, to treat damp sore and eczema, talc can often be used in combi- nation with dried alum, phellodendron bark and
other drugs for eliminating damp- ness and relieving itching, ground into powder for external use.
Dosage and Administration: 10~15g. Wrapped in gauze and decocted in water, for external use in the appropriate amount.
Modern Researches: With its effects of absorption and astringency, talc can protect mucosa of stomach and intestine,
prevent vomiting and arrest diarrhea when taken orally, and protect surface of wound, absorb exudates and promote healing
when used externally.
