Herbal Medicine for Inducing Diuresis and Removing Dampness- Yi Yi Ren

This herb is the mature seed of the perennial herbaceous plant Coix lachryma-jobi L. of family Gramineae, produced in most
areas of China, mainly in Fu Jian, He Bei, Liao Ning and other provinces of China. It is collected in autumn when the seed is
mature, dried in sunlight and cleared of crust and cortex, and then it is used unprepared or stir baked. The herb is also called
raw coix seed or stir-baked coix seed.
Properties: The herb is sweet and tasteless in flavour, slightly cold in nature. It acts on spleen, stomach, and lung channels.
Tasteless for removing dampness, sweet for tonifying spleen, slight coldness' for eliminating heat, and neutral being but not
oily and drastic, Yi Yi Ten (coix seed) as an herb for eliminating heat and dampness is indicated for edema, diarrhea, damp
arthralgia, and pulmonary abscess.
Effects: Inducing diuresis, excreting dampness, strengthening spleen, arresting diarrhea, clearing heat and pus.
Indications:

. The herb is often used in combination with Zhu Ling (umbellate pore-fungus), Fu Ling (poria), Ze Xie (oriental water
plantain) rhizome and other herbs for inducing diure is and alleviating edema, to treat water and dampness retention, edema,
beriberi and dysuria; With Dang Shen, Bai Zhu (white atractylodes rhizome), Fu Ling (poria), Shan Yao (Chinese yam rhizome)
and other herbs for strengthening spleen and arresting diarrhea, such as Shen Ling Bai Zhu San, to treat diarrhea and anorexia
due to spleen deficiency.
2. The herb is often used in combination with Huang Bo (phellodendron bark), Cang Zhu (atractylodes rhizome), Niu Xi
(achyranthes root) for clearing heat and dampness, alleviating arthralgia and pain, to treat arthralgia due to dampness heat and
swelling, heat and pain in joints; and with Ku Xin Ren (apricot kernel), Kou Ren (round cardamon seed) and other herbs for
eliminating dampness and heat and promoting Qi circulation, such as San Ren Tang , to treat early dampness heat syndrome,
fever, fatigue, chest tightness, and greasy tongue.
3. The herb can be used in  combination with Lu Gen (common reed root), Dong Guo Ren (Chinese waxgourd seed) and other
herbs for clearing heat from the lung and pus, such as Wei Jing Tang, to treat pulmonary abscess, cough and purutemr
phlegm; with Da Huang (rhubarb), Tao Ren (peach kernel), Pu Gong Yin (dandelion) and other herbs for clearing heat and
suppuration of the intestine to treat acute appendicitis and abdominal pain.
Dosage and Administration: 10~30g. It is appropriate to be used stir-baked to strengthen spleen and arrest diarrhea, and
used unprepared in other dituations.
Modern Researches: The oil contained in Yi Yi Ren (coix seed) can reduce serum calcium and blood sugar, and has the
effects of clearing heat, sedation and analgesia. Alcohol extract of Yi Yi Ren (coix seed) with injected into the pertonedl cavity
of a mouse, has an obvious effect of inhibiting Ehilich ascites carcinoma and can prolong the survival time.
