Herbal Medicine for Inducing Diuresis and Removing Dampness- Yin Chen

                                         Herba Artemisiae Ca pillaris

This herb is the seedling of the perennial herbaceous plant Artemisia capillaris Thunb. or A. scoparia Waldst. et Kitaib. of
family Compositae, produced in most areas of China, mainly in Shaanxi, Shanxi, Anhui, and other provinces of China.
The seedling is collected in spring when it grows till about 10 centimetres, cleared of old stems and impurities, dried in the sun
and used unprepared. The herb is also called capillary artemisia.
Properties: The herb is bitter in flavour, and cold in nature. It acts on the spleen, stomach, liver and gallbladder channels.
Being bitter and cold for inducing diuresis, clearing heat and dampness, normalizing functions of the gallbladder and curing
jaundice, it is an important herb for treat jaundice. Slightly coldness but not being drastic, the herb is often used in appropriate
combination with other herbs to treat Yang jaundice and Yin jaundice.
Effects: Eliminating damp-heat, normalizing functions of the gallbladder and curing jaundice.
Indications:
The herb is often used in combination with rhubarb and capejasmine fruit for expelling heat to loosen the bowel, normalizing
gallbladder function to cure jaundice, such as Yin Chen Hao Tang , to treat jaundice due to damp-heat, excessive heat-evil,
abdominal fullness and constipation; with Zhu Ling (umbellate pore-fungus), Fu Ling (poria), Ze Xie (oriental water plantain
rhizome) and other herbs for inducing diuresis and excreting dampness, to treat excessive dampness evil, oppressive chest,
greasy fur and constipation; and with Zhi Fu Zi (prepared aconite root), Gan Jiang (dried ginger) and other herbs for warming
Yang, dispersing cold, removing dampness and treating jaundice, such as Yin Chen Si Ni Tang, to treat jaundice due to cold
dampness, yellow and darkish complexion, fatigue and aversion to cold, that is Yin jaundice.
In addition, the herb can also be used to treat pruritus due to damp sore.
Dosage and Administration: l0~30g.
Modern Researches: The herb has obvious effects of normalizing gallbladder function, protecting the liver, relatively the
strong effects of relieving heat and lowering blood pressure, and a certain antiviral effect.
