This Medical herb is the whole plant with infloresence or spike of the annual herbaceous plant Schizonepeta tenuifolia
Briq. of family Labiatae, widely distributed in the South and North of China and mainly cultivated in Jiangsu, Zhejiang,
Jiangxi and other provinces of China. The herb is collected in summer and autumn, dried in the shade, cut into sections
and used raw or stir-baked yellow or carbonized. It is also called Jie Sui by some of practitioners. The carbonizes Jin
Jie is called Jin Jie Tan (JJC020)
Properties: The herb is pungent in flavour, slightly warm in nature and acts on the lung and liver channels. Pungent for
dispersing wind with a mild effect, it is often used to treat wind-cold and wind-heat due to extraneous pathogens, itching
from German measles and other syndromes. Stir-baked and carbonized herb for acting on blood, it has a haemostatic
effect.
Effects: Inducing sweats, dispelling extraneous pathogens, dispersing pathogenic wind and arresting bleeding.
Indications:
1. This herb is used in combination with Fang Feng (ledebouriella root) and Qian Huo (notopterygiurn root), such as
Jing Fang Baidu San for dispersing wind-cold, to treat exterior syndromes by pathogenic wind-cold, aversion to cold
and anhidrosis; and with Jin Yin Hua (honeysuckle flower), Lian Qiao (forsythia fruit) and other diaphoretics pungent in
taste and cool in nature, such as Yin Qiao San for dispersing wind-heat, to treat upward attack of wind-heat, swelling of
pharynx, conjunctiva congestion, head-ache and high fever.
2. It is often used in combination with Fang Feng (ledebouriella root), Chi Shao (red peony root), Ku Shen (flavescent
sophora. Root) and other herbs, to treat itching from Germen measles; and with Bo He (peppermint) ,Lu Gen ( reed
rhizome) and other herbs for promoting eruption, to treat infants' initial measles without smooth eruption.
In addition, the stir-baked and Jin Jie Tan (carbonized herb) can arrest bleeding and treat
many bleeding syndromes.
Dosage and Administration: 3~l0g. Stir-baked and carbonized herb for arresting bleeding and used raw for relieving
exterior syndromes.
Modern Researches: Schizonepeta decoction can increase hidropoiesis and slightly clear heat. It has a relatively
strong effect of inhibiting Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus diphtheria, and a certain inhibiting effect on typhoid
bacillus and Bacillus dysenteries. The stir-baked and carbonized herb can shorten bleeding time. (Aidus & E-fong Herbal

   荆芥《本经》
为唇形科一年生草本植物荆芥 Schizone peta tenuifolia Briq. 的带花序的全草或花穗 , 中国南北分布甚广 , 主产于江
苏、浙江及江西等地。多系人工栽培。夏秋采收 , 阴干切段。生 用、炒黄或炒炭。本品又名芥穗。炒后成碳者称荆
芥炭

【药性说明】味辛 , 性微温。归肺、肝经。本品性平偏温 , 以辛为用 , 长于散风 , 因其作用和缓不烈 , 故外感风
寒 , 风热及风疹搔痒等证 , 均为常用之品。炒炭人血分 , 有止血之功。
【药物功效】发表散风 , 止血。

【临床应用】
1. 治风寒表证 , 恶寒无汗 , 配防风、羌活同用 , 以发散风寒 , 如荆防败毒散 ; 治风热上攻 , 咽肿目赤 , 头痛
发热 , 配银花、连翘等辛凉解表药 , 以疏散风热 , 如银翘散。

2. 治风疹搔痒 , 配防风、赤芍、苦参等药 ; 治小儿麻疹初起 , 透发不畅 , 常配薄荷、芦根等透疹药同用。

此外 , 本品炒炭能止血 , 还可用治多种出血证。

【用量用法】 3~10 克。止血用止血用荆芥炭 , 解表生用。

【现代研究】本品水煎剂能增加汗腺分泌 , 有微弱解热作用。对金黄色葡萄球菌、白喉杆菌有较强的抑制作用 ; 对
伤寒杆菌、荆疾杆菌也有一定抑制作用。本品炒炭能缩短出血时间。
