                                      Rhizoma Zedoariae

It is the rhizoma of the perennial herb Curcuma zedoaria (Berg) Rose, C. aromatica Salisb, or C. kwangsiensis S. Lee
et C. F. Liang of the family Zingiberaceae, which is mainly produced in Guang Xi, Sichuan and Zhe Jiang Provinces and
other places of China. It is collected in autumn and summer. After being washed clean, it is steamed, and dried in the
sun. The fibrous rootlets are rerrioved. After moistened thoroughly, it is cut into slices, used unprepared or after
processed with vinegar. It is also called Peng E Zhu, Wen zhu, Zhu Yao by some TCM practitioners..
Properties: It is bitter and pungent in flavour, warm in nature, acting on the liver and spleen channels. Being pungent
and bitter for dispersion and purgation, it acts strongly on the blood division to promote blood circulation and can
remove stasis in the blood to subside mass in the abdomen. When it acts on the Qi system, it can remove food
stagnation. It is used to treat amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea due to stasis in the blood division, abdominal mass, distending
pain due to indigestion, and other syndromes.
Effects: Relieving blood and Qi stasis, promoting digestion, and relieving pain.
Indications:

. For treatment of amenorrhea due to stagnation of Qi and blood or abdominal mass, it is usually used in combination
with Chuang Xiong (Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong), Niu Xi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae), San Leng (Rhizoma
Spargahii), Chuan Shan Jia (Squama Manitis), Dan Shen (Radix Salivae Miltiorrhizae), and other herbs having the effect
of removing blood stasis and restoring menstruation and subsiding abdominal mass.
2. For treatment of indigestion, stagnation of Qi and abdominal distention, it is frequently used together with Qing Pi
(Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride), Bin Lang (Semen Arecae), Ma Ya (Fructus Hordei Germinatus), Lai Fu Zi
(Semen Raphani), and other herbs having the effects of promoting digestion and removing stagnation of Qi.
Dosage and Administration: 3~10g. Precautions: Contraindicated in pregnancy.
Modern Researches: Its oil preparation, the Oleum Curcumae Aromaticae remarkably inhibits and destroys Ehrlich's
ascites carcinoma cells in mice, L615 leukemia cells in 651 inbred mice, and hepatic carcinoma cell line. Its decoction
effectively promotes absorption of autologous blood and blood clot in the ab-domen of rabbits. Its volatile oil possesses
antimicrobial and stomach tonic effects. The alcohol extraction of its rhizoma ahd its isolated terpines and
sesquiterpenoids have the evident action of stop pregnancy in early period
