Rhizoma Polygoni Cuspidati
It is the root and rhizome of the perennial herb Polygonum cuspidatum Sieb et Zucco of the family Polygonaceae. It is
produced in most regions of China and is collected in late autumn and early winter. After removal of the fibrous rootlets,
it is washed clean and cut freshly into slices and dried in the sun.
Properties: Bitterness in flavour and coldness in nature, it acts on the lung, liver, gallbladder and large intestine channels.
Being bitter for dispersion and purgation, and cold for reducing fever and sending down abnormally ascending Qi, it
effects on the liver channel and the blood system promoting blood circulation, relieves blood stasis and pain. Acting on
the qi division of lung and inte::;tines, it clears away heat from lung and large intestine, resolves phlegm and cough, expels
the pathogenic heat to loosen the bowels. Acting on the liver and gallbladder channels. it can clear away dampness heat
to cure jaundice. Therefore, it is used to treat pathogenic heat accumulated in the blood system, cough due to the lung
heat, constipation caused by accumulation of heat jaundice due to dampness heat and other syndromes.
Effects: Promoting blood circulation by relieving blood stasis, clearing away heat and promoting diuresis, detoxicating,
resolving phlegm and relaxing the bowels.
Indications:
1. For treatment of amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea caused by blood stasis, it can be used in combination with Dang Gui
(Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Yi Mu Cao (Herba Leonuri), Hong Hua (Flos Carthami), and other herbs with the effect of
promoting blood flow to regulate menstruation. For treatment of arthralgia syndrome due to dampness heat, it can be
used together with Sang Zhi (Ramulus Mori), Qin Jiu (Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae), Fang Ji (Radix Stephaniae
Tetrandrae), Ren Dong Teng (Caulis Lonicerae), and other herbs with the effects of expelling wind and dampness,
clearing heat and obstruction in the channels.
2. For treatment of stranguria due to dampness heat or leukorrhea due to damphea t, it can be used together with Cang
Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis), Huang Bo (Cortex Phellodendri), Yi Yi Ren (Semen Coicis), Tu Fu Ling (Rhizoma
Smilacis Glabrae), Mian Bie Xie (Rhizoma Dioscoreae Septemlobae), and other herbs having the effects of inducing
diuresis for treating stranguria, clearing heat and drying dampness. For treatment of jaundice due to dampness heat or
chole lithiasis, it can be used in combination with Yu Jin (Radix Curcumae), Yin Chen (Herba Artemisiae Scopariae), Jin
Qian Cao (Herba Lysimachiae), Zhi Zi (Fructus Gardeniae), and other herbs having the effects of clearing away the
dampness heat, facilitating excretion of bile and gallstones.
3. For treatment of cough due to the lung-heat, it can be used in combination with Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae), Bai
Mu (Bulbus Fritillariae), Sang Bai Pi (Cortex Mori Radicis). and other herbs with the effects of removing heat from the
lung and dissolving phlegm to relieve cough; For treatment of constipation due to accumulation of heat, it can be used
together with Hou Pu (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis), Zhi Shi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus), Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas),
and other herbs to expel the heat, loosen the bowels, and relieve the stagnation of Qi.
Besides, it is used to treat carbuncle, scalds and burns.
Dosage and Administration: 10~30g.
Precautions: Contraindicated in pregnancy.
Modern Researches: Its decoction has the inhibiting effect on Staphyloccocus aureus, Streptococcus hemolyticus, P
seudonomas aeruginosa, Shigella Tlexneri, etc. and has the anti-influenza virus-effect. Moreover, it possesses effects of
relieving cough, relieving asthma, lowering blood pressure, blood lipids, and blood sugar, anti-inflamatory, hemostatic,
sedative, diuretic, etc.
