                                                Rhizoma Corydalis

It is the stem tuber of the perennial herb Corydalis turtschaninovii Bess. f. yanhusuo Y. H. Chou et C. C. Hsu of the
family Paraveraceae. It is mainly produced in Zhe Jiang Province of China. It is collected after the solar term, the
beginning of summer. After the removal of the shoot leaf and fibrous rootlets, it is washed clean and dried in the sun. It is
crushed and used unprepared : stir-fried with vinegar or wine. It is also called Yuan Hu Suo, Xuan Hu suo, Chao Yan
hu.
Properties: It is pungent and bitter in flavour, warm in nature, acts on the heart, liver and spleen channels. Being
pungent for dispersing blood stasis, warm for freeing the passage of blood, it effects both on the blood division of heart
and liver and the Qi in spleen and lung. Its function is promoting Qi and blood circulation, and it is especially good at
relieving pain. It is usually used to treat various pains due to stasis in the blood division.
Effects: Promoting blood circulation by removing blood stasis, and promoting circulation of Qi to stop pain.
Indications:
1.
For treatment of blood stasis m heart channel, colicky pain due to obstruction of Qi in the chest, it is usually used in
combination with Chuan Xiong (Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong), Dan Shen (Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae), Hong Hua
(Flos Carthami), and other herbs with the effect of removing blood stasis to relieve pain; For treatment of blood stasis,
epigastric, stabbing pain it can be used together with Dan Shen (Radix salviae Miltiorrhizae), Jian Xiang (Lignum
Dalbergiae Odoriferae), Sha Ren (Fructus Amomi), Wu Lin Zhi (Faeces Trogopterorum), and other drugs having the
function of promoting flow of Qi to relieve pain.
2. For treatment of distending pain on the chest and hypochondrium caused by Qi and blood stasis in the liver channel,
irregular menstruation, it can be used in combination with Chai Hu (Radix Bupleuri), Xiang Fu (Rhizoma Cyperi), Dang
Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Chuan Xiang (Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong), and other herbs; For treatment of
accumulation of cold in the liver, channel, cold-pain in the lower abdomen, it is used together with Xiao Hui Xiang
(Fructus Foeniculi), Wu Yao (Radix Linderae), Wu Zhu Yu (Fructus Euodiae), and other herbs having the effect of
warming the liver channel to expel the cold, promoting circulation of Qi to relieve pain.
Besides, it is used to treat headache due to blood stasis, pain caused by traumatic ecchymoses, arthralgia caused by
wind dampness.
Dosage and Administration: 3~10g; 1.5~3g of powder each time taken with warm water.
Modern Researches: The corydalis B it contains possesses sedative and hypnotic and the analgesic effects. Total
corydaline has about 40 percent inalgesic effect of morphine. It can also increase coronary blood flow, protect
myocardium from ischemia, thus it has therapeutic effect on coronary heart disease.
