Herbs with the main effects of regulating Qi, promoting Qi circulation and treating stagnation of Qi are called herbal
medications for regulating Qi or promoting Qi circulation.

Herbs of this type are mainly pungent for dispersing, warming and clearing, and aromatic for moving around, acting on
the liver and stomach channels.

They have the effects of promoting circulation of Qi, normalizing function of the stomach, soothing the liver and relieving
depression. Some of these herbs can also remove dampness, enliven the spleen, disperse cold and alleviate pain. These
drugs are indicated for Qi stagnation in the spleen and stomach, gastro-abdominal distention and fullness, adverse rising
of the stomach Qi, vomiting, hiccup, stag- nation of the liver Qi, distention and pain in the chest and hypochondrium,
abdominal colic due to invasion of cold, abdominal pain and other syndromes.

Herbs for regulating Qi are used in combination with drugs for promoting digestion to treat dyspepsia; with drugs for
removing dampness to treat retention of dampness and stagnation of Qi; with drugs for warming the interior and
dispersing cold to treat constipation due to cold and stagnation of Qi; with drugs for purging liver fire to treat stagnation
of the liver Qi and heat; and with herbs for promoting blood circulation to treat Qi and blood stasis.
It should be careful to use pungent, warm and dry drugs, which easily impair Yin and deplete Qi.
