Herbal Medicine for Strengthening Deficiency
Herbs that can supplement organic materials or strengthen functions are called tonics for deficiency syndromes or for
nourishment.
With their effects of strengthening Qi, blood, Yin and Yang, tonics are indicated for all types of deficiency syndromes
caused by deficiency of Qi, blood, Yin an Yang, such as deficiency of spleen qi, lung qi, heart blood, liver blood, lung
yin, kidney yin, spleen yang and kidney yang. According to their different effects and indications, tonics are divided into
four types of drugs for tonifying Qi. blood. Yin and Yang.
Yin, Yang, Qi and blood are physiologically linked to and pathologically affected by one another. Therefore, Qi
deficiency and Yang deficiency are often seen at the same time, so are Yin deficiency and blood deficiency, Qi
deficiency and blood deficiency, and Yin deficiency and Yang deficiency. For this reason, herbs for tonfiying Qi and
Yang are often used together for mutual reinforcement, so are drugs for tonifying Yin and blood, drugs for tonifying Qi
and blood and drugs for tonifying Yin and Yang, etc. In addition, for patients with hypoimmunity while pathogenic
factors prevailing, tonics should be used in combination with drugs for eliminating pathogenic factors according to their
conditions of illness, in order to strengthen the immunity and eliminate pathogenic factors.
Some nourishing tonics with greasy nature can increase dampness and affect spleen, impede digestion. It will be better
to use them in combination with herbs for appetising and strengthening the spleen.
