This medical herb is the whole plant of the perennial herbaceous plants Asarum heterotropoides Fr. Schmidt var.
mandshuricum (Maxim. )Kitag. , A. sieboldii Miq. Var. seoulense Nakai or A. sieboldii Miq of family Aristolochiaceae. The first
two are known as Liao Xixin, mainly produced in Liaoning and Jilin Provinces; and the last as Hua Xixin, mainly produced in
Shanxi Province of China. The herb is collected in summer and autumn when the fruit is ripe or in early autumn, cleared of
mud and sand, dried in the shade, cut into sections and used in raw. It is also called Bei (North) Xi Xin by some of
practitioners.
Properties: The herb is pungent in flavour, warm in nature and acts on the heart, lung, and kidney channels. It is
Pungent for dispersion, warming for removing blockage, aromatic for moving from exterior to interior, it can disperse cold
from exterior, dispel cold from interior, warm the lung, clear passages and relieve pain with good effect. It is an important herb for
treatment of Yang insufficiency caused by extraneous pathogens, headache due to pathogenic wind, cold fluid retention, cough and asthma.
Effects: Expelling wind, dispersing cold, clearing passages, relieving pain, warming the lung and removing fluid
retention.
Indications:
1. Xi Xin can be used in combination with prepared Zhi Fu Zi (aconite root), such as Mahuang Fuzi Xixin Tang for
reinforcing Yang and dispelling extraneous pathogens,to treat Yang deficiency caused by extraneous pathogens with symptoms
of wind-cold, aversion to cold, anhidrosis, and ectopic radial and deep pulse and with Fang Feng (ledebouriella root), Qiang
Huo (notopterygium root) and other herbs, such as Jiuwei Qianghuo Tang, to treat wind-cold type of common cold, headache,
and nasal obstruction
2. To treat headache due to rhinorrhea with turbid discharge and nasal obstruction, sieboldii is often used in combination
with Xin Yi (magnolia flower) , Bo He (peppermint) and other herbs.
3. To treat cold fluid retention in the lung and cough with abundant white and thin phlegm, the drug can be used in
combination with Gan Jiang (dried ginger), Zhi Ban Xia (pinellia tuber) and other herbs, such as Xiao Qinglong Tang for
warming the lung and removing fluid retention.
In addition, Xi Xin can also be used to treat arthralgia due to wind-cold, headache caused by wind, toothache due to wind
and fire, and other syndromes.
Dosage and Administration: 1~3g.
Precautions: There is an old saying: "More than one Qian of Xi Xin should never be used." Therefore, it should be very
careful to use in excessive dosage.
Modern Researches: Hua Xixin extract with water or alcohol can blockade impulse conduction of sciatic nerve in the frog,
and has the effect of infiltration anesthesia in tests on the dermic cumulus of the guinea pig. The volatile oil has the effects of
superficial anesthesia, clearing heat and alleviating pain in tests on animals, directly inhibiting cardiac muscle and smooth
muscle. Its decoction has an effect of arresting cough.
细辛《本经》
为马兜铃科多年生草本植物北细辛 Asarum heterotro ρ aides Fr. Schmidt Var. mandshu- ricum (Maxim. ) K
itag. 、汉城细辛 A. siebaldii Miq. Var. seaulense Nakai 或华细辛 A. siebal- dii Miq 的全草。前两种习称
" 辽细辛 ", 主产于辽宁、吉林 ," 华细辛 " 主产于陕西。夏秋果熟期 或初秋采挖 , 除去泥沙 , 阴干。切段生
用。本品又名北细辛、炙细辛。
【药性说明】味辛 , 性温。归心、肺、肾经。本品辛散温通 , 芳香走窜 , 达表入里 , 能散表寒 , 祛里寒 , 温肺
通窍 , 且止痛功良。为阳虚外感、伏风头痛、寒饮喘咳之要药。
【药物功效】祛风散寒 , 通窍止痛 , 温肺化饮。
【临床应用】
1. 治外感风寒 , 恶寒无汗 , 脉反沉者 , 即阳虚外感 , 配附子以助阳解表 , 如麻黄附子细辛汤,治一般风寒感冒
, 头痛鼻塞 , 可配防风、羌活等药 , 如九昧羌活汤。
2. 治鼻渊头痛 , 鼻塞不通 , 鼻流浊涕 , 常配辛夷、薄荷等药同用。
3. 治疗寒饮伏肺 , 咳嗽痰多、色白清稀 , 可配干姜、半夏等温肺化饮药同用 , 如小青龙汤。 此外 , 本品还可用
治风寒痹痛、伏风头痛、风火牙痛等证。
【用量用法】 1-3 克。
【使用注意】反黎芦。古有 " 细辛不过钱 " 之说 , 故用量不宜过大。
【现代研究】华细辛水浸剂或醇浸剂能阻断蛙坐骨神经的冲动传导 ,在豚鼠皮丘试验中有浸润麻醉效力。挥发油尚有
表面麻醉作用 ; 动物实验有解热和镇痛作用 , 并对心肌、平滑三 有直接抑制作用。水煎剂有镇咳作用。
