Herbal Medicine for Removing Exterior Syndromes- Xiang Ru -香薷

This herb is the whole plant of the perennial herbaceous plants Elscholtzia splendens Nakai ex f. Maekawa. and Masla
Chinensis Maxim of family Labiatae. Mainly produced in Jiangxi, Anhui, Henan and other provinces. It is produced in Jiangxi
with large output and good quality. The whole plant is harvested after the fruit is mature, dried in the sun and cut into sections
for use.
Properties: The herb is pungent in flavour, slightly warm in nature and acts on the lung and stomach channels. Being pungent
and warm for dispersion and aromatic for removing dampness, the herb can disperse pathogenic wind cold from the lung
channel and induce diuresis. With its effect similar to and power weaker than Ma Huang (ephedra), the herb is indicated for
common cold in summer, hence the name" summer Mahuang (ephedra)". It can also remove dampness and regulate the
stomach and spleen. Therefore, it is particularly suitable for patients with both exterior syndromes and summer dampness in
the interior.
Effects: Inducing sweats to dispel exopathogens, removing dampness to regulate the stomach, and inducing diuresis to
remove edema.
Indications:
1. To treat cold affected by exopathogens and summer dampness in the interior caused by relaxation in a cool place and cold
drink in summer with symptoms of aversion to cold, fever, headache, anhidrosis, vomiting, diarrhea and greasy fur, that is, the
syndrome of blockade of summer dampness by severe pathogenic cold, the herb is used in combination with magnolia bark
and hyacinth bean, such as Xiangru Yin for dispelling exopathogens from the exterior and removing dampness from the
interior.
2. To treat edema due to deficiency of the spleen, or edema due to beriberi and difficulty in urination. The  herb is often used
in combination with herbs for strengthening the spleen and inducing diuresis to eliminate edema.
Dosage and Administration: 3~ l0 g. Concentrated decoction for inducing diuresis to eliminate edema.
Modern Researches: The volatile oil contained in the herb has the effects of inducing sweats, clearing heat. Stimulating the
secretion of the digestive gland and gastrointestinal peristalsis, expecting phlegm, arresting cough and inducing diuresis.(Aidus
