This Medical herb is the bud of the machaka magnolia liliflora Desr. of family Magnoliaceae, mainly cultivated in Henan, Anhui,
Sichuan and other provinces of China. The herb is collected in early spring when the bud is not in blossom, dried in the sun
and cleared of stalks. The herb is called Xinyi Hua or Mubi Hua by some of practitioners.

Properties: The herb is pungent in flavour, warm in nature and acts on the lung and stomach channels. Pungent and warm for
dispersion and aromatic for moving about, with its floating effect, the herb is good at dispersing pathogenic wind and clearing
nasal passage. It is an important herb to treat rhinorrhea with turbid discharge.

Effects: Dispersing wind-cold and clearing nasal passage. Indications:
1. The herb is used in combination with Bai Zhi (dahurian angelica root), Chan Er Zi (xanthium) and other herbs for dispersing
wind and clearing passage, to treat win8-cold type of rhinorrhea with turbid discharge, headache and nasal obstruction; and
with Bo He (peppermint) , Chan Er Zi (xanthium) and other herbs for dispersing wind-heat, clearing passage and  relieving
pain, to treat wind-heat type of rhinorrhea with turbid discharge and headache.

2. To treat wind-cold affected by extraneous pathogens, headache, and nasal obstruction, the herb is used in combination with
Fang Feng (ledebouriella root), Bai Zhi (dahurian angelica root)  and other herbs for dispersing wind-cold.

Dosage and Administration: 3~10g. Wrapped in agauze for decoction.

Modern Researches: With its astringing effect, magnolia flower can protect
nasal mucosa and alleviate inflammation. Its infusion or decoction has the effect of inflammation anesthesia. Its extract with
water has the effect of lowering blood pressure. Its decoction can excite uterine smooth muscle, promote intestinal movement
and inhibit various kinds of pathogenic bacteria. Its volatile oil has sedative and analgesic effects.(Aidus & E-fong Herbal Solution)

                    辛夷《本经》
为木兰科落叶灌木植物辛夷 Magnolia liliflora Desr. 的花蕾。主产于河南、安徽及四川等地。多为栽培。早春花蕾
未开放时采摘晒干。去尽技梗。本品又名辛夷花、木笔花。

【药性说明】味辛 , 性温。归肺、胃经。本品辛温发散 , 芳香走窜 , 其性上达 , 功善散风邪 .通鼻窍 , 向为鼻渊要
药。

【药物功效】散风寒 , 通鼻窍。

【临床应用】

1. 治鼻渊头痛 , 鼻塞不通 , 偏于风寒者 , 配白芷、苍耳等散寒通窍药同用 ; 鼻渊头痛偏于风热者者, 配伍薄荷、苍耳
子等药 , 以疏散风热 , 通窍止痛。

2. 治外感风寒 , 头痛鼻塞 , 配伍防风、白芷等发散风寒药。

【用量用法】 3_lO 克。人汤剂宜布包煎。

【现代研究】辛夷有收敛作用 , 保护鼻黏膜 , 减轻炎症 ; 浸剂或煎剂均有浸润麻醉作用 ; 水提取物有降压作用 ; 水煎
剂能兴奋子宫平滑肌 , 亢奋肠运动 ; 对多种致病菌有抑制作用 ; 挥发油有镇静、镇痛作用。
